Default stalled auto or 6 speed swap?

Figured I'd get everyones opinion on this. I'm debating to rebuild/beef up my 4L60E and put a nice stall in it or just swap it over to 6 speed. Its gonna cost roughly the same either way, 6 speed swap may be cheaper. I think I'd be happy with a manual 6 speed cause they are fun to drive, more reliable. I've never been in a car with a stall tho and everyone on here seems to love them. I maybe run my car at the track 2-3 times a year, which is where an auto would be better, but its mainly a weekend cruiser.

Stalled auto for me. Also, manuals are not more reliable.

Stalled auto for me.4000 stall behaves just fine on the street and on the highway you will not notice the big stall.

I would just stick with auto, yes manuals are more fun no doubt but are more hassle to keep up with in my opinion. A 4000 stall as the members above I would agree with. I have got on in a few trucks and cars with that size of stall and they work great!

Depends. A stalled auto is just as fun or more fun than a stick in certain situations. IMO auto for drags, stick for twisties.

Ive been looking around and a midly built 4L60E is gonna run about 1600, then about 800 for a good stall. Theres a local guy that says he can build the trans, about 450hp rating for 1250. Comes dyno tested but no real warranty.

I was in the same situation and went the 6 speed route. I haven't looked back since. Not that a stalled auto is bad. I'm sure my car would have been a little quicker with a 3600 stall and a built 4l60 but I enjoy driving the 6 speed and rowing the gears. Its all personal preference, if you like to go fast consistently then go auto if you like rowing gears then go 6 speed just different strokes...

I had a stalled auto, converted to a six speed, now I'm back to the stalled auto. Much more fun in my opinion on the street and the track.

I'll vote with soundengineer, but how much stall you need with it is debatable to try and produce the same 1/4 time.

6X is a close ratio geared trans. 2nd - 5th gear match up with a close ratio 4 sp manual 1st - 4th gears. 6X's 1st gear is lower. 6X produce a lower ratio 1st gear wtih a 3.55 rear gear than a close ratio manual 4sp with 4.10 rear gear will.

Trans makes you have to rethink stall as it's gear ratios keeps the engine in it's power band, producing a lot less RPM lost between shifts. I have 4.19 ratio in 4th gear with 3.54 rear gear in my car with 6X. 132 MPH top speed in 4th, logged.

4l65/70
3.06
1.62 -- 52.94% (high) RPM Retention 47.06% RPM DROP
1.00 -- 61.73% (high) RPM Retention 38.27% RPM DROP

TCI 6X (4L80E based)
2.93
2.23 -- 76.10% (high) RPM Retention -- 23.90% RPM DROP
1.57 -- 70.40% (high) RPM Retention -- 29.60% RPM DROP
1.18 -- 75.16% (high) RPM Retention -- 24.84% RPM DROP
1.00 -- 84.745% (high) RPM Retention -- 15.255% RPM DROP
0.75 -- 75.00% (high) RPM Retention -- 25.00% RPM DROP

Below are computer modeling of car with 4L65 trans and a 3.70 Rear end with 3000 RPM Stalled converter, and below it is same combination only change is going to 6X trans. Look at RPM 4L65 sift into 3.70 1:1 gear ratio, while the 6X shifts one more time but not into 1:1 gear, but 1.18 4th gear ratio which gives you a 4.36 equivalent rear ratio. The 6X's 4th gear mechanical advantage along with it's lower RPM lost between shifts over the 4L65 produces better times.

4L60/65

4L60E
60' = 1.819
1/8 mile = 7.864
1/8 mile (mph) = 91.0
1/4 mile = 12.279
1/4 mile (mph) = 112.3
0-60 = 4.11 secs
0-100 = 9.81 secs

6X
60' = 1.830
1/8 mile = 7.709
1/8 mile (mph) = 93.0
1/4 mile = 11.95
1/4 mile (mph) = 115.8
0-60 = 3.76 secs
0-100 = 8.90 secs

actually the 6x is a 2.97 First gear.. but whatever.. close enough...LOL

and when you make enough power... you get into 5th gear 1:1 just fine...

I actually use a 3.50 rearend... so I get the Mechanical benefits of 1st gear, and I still get reasonably low rpm for part throttle highway cruising.

and.... what the hell kind of sucky low rpm stall are you using for your data.....
try a 3600 stall..or a 4800 stall...

from the looks of your graphs, you have a 2200 stall on one, and a clutch on the other
I use the same software for playing with various combos when helping other people pick things for their car.

p.s.
I daily drive a 4800 stall... no issues, feels great... has lockup....

you should clarify....
Win = Auto
Lose = Manual
6 speed is generic...there are several 6 speed automatics on the market now.
