Th400 gear choice
Was wondering what would be a good gear choice for both street driving and track duties?
On the track we just try to setup the gearing to go across the stripe at max engine rpm. So we pick a tire that will fit and hook, determine the engine's max rpm, and gear around that.
On the street it depends on what you can tolerate for cruise, how often it will be highway driven, and at what speeds.
If you want to get on the highway and run 75-80 for very long, you will want to run a 2.70- 3.30 ish gear. Usually not real good for acceleration or 60'.
That's where the overdrive units shine but they cost more and can add complexity.
3.42-3.73 is usually the best trade-off gearing.
