Default Bang between 2-3 shift 4-3 shift

So I just installed a 3200 stall converter, and immediately after when it shifts from 2-3, there's a pretty noticeable clunk. Same thing when decelerating. It never did this before and was wondering if this was something that happens regularly? It drives fine when it gets into gear, and the clunk isn't too violent, but definitely noticeable.

Thanks in advance

trans mount is brand new, replaced it when the converter got put in. I did install a new torque arm though. It's off the trans tail and mounted on the cross brace. Could it be that? It only happens when shifting into 3rd

What kind of new trans mount - stock (rubber) or poly.
Bunch of posts on ls1tech where people mention that the poly mount gave them clunks and vibration.

It's a pretty distinct metal on metal "clunk", and its ONLY when shifting into 3rd. All other gears shift perfectly smooth. Never did this before

People thinks it the trans mount, but you don't think so. It then is most likely the last thing you did - install the converter.

Did you install the converter? If yes...
Did you reuse the old converter bolts or use new ones?
Here is a wild guess - you used new bolts that were too long and the converter is not firmly attached to the flexplate.
Did you measure the converter to flexplate gap?

It was installed by a reputable shop, so I'm not sure on the bolts or the gap. I'm just trying to wrap my head around why its only 3rd gear. If it was installed incorrectly, wouldn't it happen in all gears? Or is there something different that happens when switching from 2-3 that's different from other gears? I'm absolutely positive its not the trans mount though, I've had that go bad so I know exactly what that feels like

There is no obvious reason why it would only clunk on the 2-3 shift after a converter change. The 3-4 clutch engages on the 2-3 shift which jolts the input input shaft and drum. Perhaps this normally inaudible jolt is being transmitted to something loose in the converter. I'm just kinda guessing here since you insist it is not the trans mount.

Did the shop mess with your tune or install a shift kit? I got an otherwise good mail order tune but my line pressure was raised even though I had a bigger boost valve and requested it not be raised. It caused some very clunky harsh sounding shifts...I have a poly mount which makes the trans feel like a giant rock tumbler though.

the tune wasn't messed with during the install. it was tuned prior to the install though by Frost so yah it shifted pretty firm, but it never clunked into gear. It was tuned afterwards by NicD to adjust for the converter and do a couple other small things. Should I call him back and see maybe if he can tone down the shift pressure for 3rd gear?

It's just baffling me, like what would be messed up in the converter for it to only do it during 1 shift? I just don't know who to call and bitch out; the converter company or the shop that installed it? fml

btw, it was a stock rubber replacement for the trans mount. Just checked it out today and its fine.

Do you have a poly tq arm mount? Mine does the same thing and I think that it's a normal thing since with poly mounts you'll have more noise and feel more.

Did you check and make sure all the bolts are tight?

yah, i believe it is. So yours bangs only when shifting to 3rd? I can definitely feel more vibrations, and I expected to, just can't see how I cant feel or hear a clunk when its shifting into any other gear

I wouldn't say it bangs but I feel it shifting into third more than any other gear. I also have a built trans with a more aggressive shift so that could be the reason along with the poly mount.

hmmm, ok, so you think if I had the pressure lowered for the shift from 2-3, the noise might dampen down a little bit?

In my experience the relocated torque arm is causing the clunk/bang. I had a bmr torque arm that liked to be loud on shifts. Especially after I switched to a built 4l60e. Putting it into reverse made a nice clunk sound too. Check your trans and torque arm mount.
