Default 4l60e or TH400?

Ive been back and forth on my builds. Ive decided to stick to my 67 LeMans it will be a LQ9 milled 317s and a 232-239 TSP cam. I will be taking this car to the Strip but I will also be driving it alot on the street. Money wise would it be smarter to just go with the 400 for durability or would a stock 60 handle the power and weight. I'm hoping for 400rwhp +- probably 3600lbs not sure. Gimme your thoughts and suggestions.

I'm also looking at MonsterTrans.com tranny setups. They seem very well priced. For the Price I would probably go 4l80e just wanted to avoid the trans tunnel mods..

I kind of like my th400, but I don't drive it much. Maybe 3,000 miles in a year.
Guess it depends on where you wanna take the car and how much HP you want to make, but at 400rwhp, a 4L60e will do just fine.

If your PCM supports the 4L60E, as it should, then that is my recommendation for 400 rwhp. I would suggest one of the intermediate level 4L60E from RPM, FLT, Performabuilt and, as of recently, Jakes.
Several builders have told me that well built units can handle 600HP as long as you don't use Nitrous - I'm told that the sudden surge from Nitrous can break hard parts such as the output shaft. (Unless you want to pay an extra $1000 for billet input and output shafts.) However (I'm told) that Super/Turbo charging is fine because the boost is more gradual.

This is just my opinion.

x2^...For the power he is making the 60e will be more than fine. If you ever go bigger on power than thats the time to consider a 80e or TH400 swap.

Its really up to you. Do you want a weaker transmission with overdrive - or a stronger transmission without overdrive.

3k miles a year Id probably lean more towards the 400, especially in an older car putting down 400whp.

Definitely go with the 400 trans man. I'm on my 3rd 4L60E, both previous ones as well as current one have been "built". My car trashed the first two with 350 rwhp going to them.

It's well known I'm NOT one to push the 4L60E and that I'm a big proponent of the TH400 or 4L80E.

I also try not to oversell or undersell the customer. I like to build bulletproof but I also don't feel a guy with a 400 HP combop needs a Stage 5 4L80E or even necessarily a 4L80E. I would rather put someone in a unit that works for them.

This combo seems like a good candidate for a 4L60E IMO. The 4L60E should be comfortable at 400 RWHP and should live a respectably long life.

As bulletproof as the TH400 is, I hate to see someone use a non-OD trans in a street car.

This is simple. For 400-600rwhp a well built 60e will put up with it for a long time. And not be a bitch to swap over and you have overdrive etc....

if you plan on making serious power a few years from now aka 600+ to 1000+ you better grab a th400 or 80e. No one better to build you one than Jake either.
