4l60e or TH400?
I'm also looking at MonsterTrans.com tranny setups. They seem very well priced. For the Price I would probably go 4l80e just wanted to avoid the trans tunnel mods..
Guess it depends on where you wanna take the car and how much HP you want to make, but at 400rwhp, a 4L60e will do just fine.
If your PCM supports the 4L60E, as it should, then that is my recommendation for 400 rwhp. I would suggest one of the intermediate level 4L60E from RPM, FLT, Performabuilt and, as of recently, Jakes.
Several builders have told me that well built units can handle 600HP as long as you don't use Nitrous - I'm told that the sudden surge from Nitrous can break hard parts such as the output shaft. (Unless you want to pay an extra $1000 for billet input and output shafts.) However (I'm told) that Super/Turbo charging is fine because the boost is more gradual.
This is just my opinion.

3k miles a year Id probably lean more towards the 400, especially in an older car putting down 400whp.

I also try not to oversell or undersell the customer. I like to build bulletproof but I also don't feel a guy with a 400 HP combop needs a Stage 5 4L80E or even necessarily a 4L80E. I would rather put someone in a unit that works for them.
This combo seems like a good candidate for a 4L60E IMO. The 4L60E should be comfortable at 400 RWHP and should live a respectably long life.
As bulletproof as the TH400 is, I hate to see someone use a non-OD trans in a street car.

if you plan on making serious power a few years from now aka 600+ to 1000+ you better grab a th400 or 80e. No one better to build you one than Jake either.
