Default 99 A4 Trans am wont shift into 2nd

I bought my trans am summer of last year and it has been sitting until today. I took it out and about around 3 and came back home around 9. On my way home for some reason the car was stuck in 1st and wouldnt shift into second or 3rd for whatever reason. I am also getting a check gauges light on my dash and the shifting problems started as soon as the check gauges light started coming on 20 minutes before i started on my way home. Am i gonna need a new tranny?

The check light most likely indicates a electrical problem such a burnt out shift solenoid which is trivial and inexpensive to replace. You need to start by scanning the car for codes. Many auto parts stores can do that for free. Get the code number(s) and post them here.

Ok i scanned the car for codes and nothing popped up at all. Also since i just got the car i checked the trans dip stick..........and there was hardly any trans fluid in it smfh. I dont know why i didnt check it before i went out driving. I was thinking it would be full from the previous owner. Hopefully i havent friend the transmission. I read the stick and it said the fluid level should be on the X but mines was just at the tip of the stick smh.

I think the light had something to do with low gas. I filled back up and the light went away. I added 3 bottles of dex 6 trans fluid and went for a drive and i still dont have gears 2-3.

Well since ur saying u were low on fluid and it won't shift out of first u might've burned up the bands in the trans....had a similar problem with mine because mine had a leak I didn't know about....i would definitely try cheaper options like the solenoid first like everyone else suggested

Yes, the shift solenoids are easy to replace. At $15 each, replace both to be sure.
1. Drop the pan, catching the fluid.
2. Remove the trans filter.
3. Locate the side-by-side solenoids and and unclip their electrical plugs.
3. Using a very small screwdriver, pull out the metal U-like clips that hold the solenoids.
One solenoid is spring loaded (about 2 lbs), so push it in to get the clip out.
4. Install the new solenoids, insert the holding clips and clip on the electrical plugs.
5. You will have to decide if you want to replace the filter and fluid.
