Default 4l60E No second gear nead help!

Hello
Owner of a low mile Firehawk 2002, 28000 miles with 4L60E
Now I have no second gear
Have changed: 1-2 solenoid, second servo to the Corvette servo, second accumulator, new fluid and filters
and still no second gear.
Works perfectly in normal driving, at full throttle second is slipping.
Driving the D and kick down, to 3 OK, to 2 slips
1,3,4, D, R works perfectly
Nothing wrong with the fluid when I changed, looks ok, does not smell burnt.
Everything looks new inside the gearbox
Some tips and ideas?
Electronics? Fuse?
Have hard to imagine something big!

Thanks Stefan in Sweden

It could be that the band broke or the anchor that holds the band in place in the case broke.

sounds like an issue with the band

the trans comes with the "corvette" servo unless you are referring to some other aftermarket one

I think that Jon missed that you have 4th gear working.
WS6Stefan: Please confirm that 4th gear works.

IIRC, CarlsonAuto posted (or told me) that when the band is loose, usually 2nd gear will slip before 4th gear slips.
You should determine how much end play your servo has. This can be "roughly" measured by pushing hard on the servo cover (perhaps with a crow bar) and estimating how far it moves in.
The recommended amount is .075 to .125 (about 1/16" to 1/8").
IIRC (again), somewhere around .185 (3/16") the band may start slipping. While excessive end play probably indicates your band is worn, you may be able to get some more life out of the trans by lengthening the servo pin. This can be done by simply welding a "glob" on the end of the pin and grinding it down to the correct length and shape. The Sonnax servo instructions help getting the endplay right and how to grind a longer pin:

http://www.sonnax.com/system/instruc...911-03K-IN.pdf

Obviously you could buy a longer pin, but those generally also need grinding.

Alternatively, if you have the Transgo HD2 kit, it comes with two special spacer rings that will tighten the servo without changing the pin.

I'm not an expert on this, so watch for corrections/additions to my info.

Ted.

My bad i should slow down my reading posts when i am at work i totally missed that 4th is working fine. The band is most likely just burnt which explains why it works ok under normal driving and it slips under wot.

I would say either the band is burned or you have a leaking or damaged accumulator for 2nd or a damaged second gear servo or seal.

Thanks.
If the band is burn i have to rebuilt :-(
It's hard to find a shop in Sweden that can
Rebuilt a 4l60E, and i have to take down the trans for shipping.

Do you think i should try the Transgo kit??
I can do that with trans in place? Right??

Thanks Stefan

Tightening up the servo with the Transgo HD2 kit's shims might extend the life of the trans; I would try to measure the end play first, and if loose, consider cheaper alternatives. Alternatively, the Sonnax Super Hold 2ng gear servo might help.
As Frank (Performabuilt) posted, you should also check the 2nd apply piston and seal in the servo.
Due to tight clearance in cars, it is often impossible to remove the servo without first removing the drive shaft and trans mount to lower it a fair amount. Trucks and SUVs often have enough clearance.

Best of luck buddy.

Default No second gear

So today i installed a corvette servo and now i switch my truck to drive and my first gear revs the rpms all the way to 6 and wont go to second gear unless i let go a bit of the gas then it goes to 2nd. If i manually go all the way to 1st gear then shift to 2nd gear my truck will just rev. My 2nd gear does not work. What could i change or check so it can be fixed?? Please help!

Check to make sure you installed the servo setup as deep as it's supposed to go. If it started doing it right after you replace a servo, sounds like the servo wasn't installed right.

is the servo suppose to be really deep? And yes before the servo install it was working perfectly fine no issue.

Alot of guys keep telling me the transmission needs to be rebuilt. I dont believe so because it was working perfectly fine and 1 hour later with a corvette servo install it started acting up. What do you think? Like you said before you think the servo was installed incorrectly?

I had the truck scanned and they told me the shift solenoid A was out.

You're dealing with a servo pin where 1/8 of an inch extra of travel could mean the difference between working perfectly and not engaging the band. It's possible to install the servo assembly with the snap ring not 100% in the groove. I would just double check your installation.

That's random that you'd suddenly get a code for solenoid A, but maybe it just happened to go bad when you changed the servo and your servo installation is unrelated to the problem. A code's a code and your computer says solenoid A isn't working right. Solenoid A is the 1-2 shift solenoid and has to turn off in second gear. It's easy to change and is pretty cheap. You'll have to do a pan drop though.

Right, if the computer says that Solenoid A is bad, it won't shift, simple as that.
However it is a strange coincidence, but perhaps there's a bad connection and you jiggled it working on the servo.

Check the servo end by pressing on the servo cover with a small ruler next to it; estimate how much the cover moves in. Stock spec is .075 to .120 (about 1/16" to 1/8") and somewhere around .200 you will lose 2nd gear because the band is worn.
I've documented how to increase the servo pin length to get some additional life out of the band, and a member just reported getting 40,000+ more miles doing my trick several years ago:
