is a converter recommended with a cam??
Perfect for my set up.. Wouldn't you say Col.???"
Yup, sounds good.
Idles great at 900 rpm.
Personally I think the 5600SE I get with this converter sucks ***. I'd be much happier with 4000 - 4500 max SE. The cam makes good power from around 3500rpm and comes on strongfrom 4000rpm.
I had a SS3800 converter with my stock engine and loved it. I thought the YTP4400 would work awesome with my current engine combo, but all it really seems to do is waste rpm. I shift at 7k, get 5600SE and around 1400rpm slippage at that shift rpm. It feels like the car pulls harder with the converter locked from a lower rpm than the converter unlocked at a higher rpm.
Would a PY3400E or PY3600E be better for my application?
Would like your opinions Colonel and Ragtop 99. Thanks.
That's an odd ratio!

If you have a setup that has you pulling all the way to 7000, you would absolutely shoot yourself in the foot if you ran a converter with a lower SE than you have now. For best ETs you are possibly UNDERstalled. You're certainly not overstalled.
How a car feels and how it performs at the track are two different things oftentimes. Consider that internally stock engines have been PROVEN without a shadow of a doubt to perform best with 4200-4400 stalls. These engines shift at only 6300 or so. No higher than 6400. Don't get confused by the "my engine makes good power down there so I'm wasting power if I'm not using those RPMs. That's not logical if you think about it. You make BETTER power UP there. Sure, there's light away from the center of the spotlight. But it's brightest in the middle! So focus your RPM range where the HP is brightest.

Take a good read at some of the posts I've made recently discussing shift points and shift extensions. Bottom line, you want to focus on getting into your maximum RWHP RPM range and keeping it there the best you can. A lower SE will pull you right out of your power (notice I said POWER, not TQ. We're not looking at TQ here nor should we be.)
