Default Gear engagement issue

So, I installed my freshly rebuilt 4l80e and everything is working great EXCEPT when I slow down and don't come to a complete stop. It seems to not engage the gears. On one occasion I slowed down to make a turn and I had to give it gas to "kick" the trans into gear. If I come to a complete stop everything works as it suppose to do. I've check my fluid levet several times and its all good. This is leading me to believe that somethings going on with the valve body. I would rather change out the valve body than pull the trans, The trans was built by a well known shop here in Michigan and as far as I know he reused the stock VB with some upgrades. Any suggestions?

Start with the basics, fluid level (actually check the dipstick calibration), shifter adjustment, then hang a pressure gauge on it and start diagnosing.

Thanks for the reply. I'm quite sure the dipstick is accurate being its a 4l80 dipstick from Performance Parts Direct and I went over the shifter adjustment so many times I lost count. I doesn't do it every time. Sometimes it shifts without issue then all of a sudden when coming down in speed to make a turn it wont grab a gear.
