Transmission option for current build
My Stage 2 4L80E's have lived at 1200 RWHP. I definitely don't feel comfortable with them at that level due to the inconsistent and weak OEM input shafts, but they've been there.
My Stage 2 TH400's have lived beyond that for years.
As a builder I always want to overbuild, but I also try not to oversell. A guy with 700 HP doesn't need a Stage 5. If he wants to have some peace of mind, a Stage 3 is a great upgrade but not necessary.
A 4L60E for more than 750 HP being reliable is a pipe dream in my opinion. I have one on the bench now with twisted off output shaft. When's the last time you saw an output shaft fail on a 4L80E?
The above post has some pricing that is off, that's why I posted actual pricing.
This is true about the 80's... just don't see them failing much at all. Thanks for all the good info.
Failures we see most often relate to installation issues.
Over the last year or so I've seen two overdrive carriers fail at the spline in ~1000 HP/TQ combos, typically they live well beyond that but occasionally they fail.
I've seen an aftermarket output shaft (27 spline) fail in a 1400 HP combo.
I had two units toast the 2nd gear clutches. I believe this may be a fluid pickup issue because they were both big power, hard accelerating combos.
I've repaired a handful that had pressure issues related to tuning problems and/or low fluid.
A 4L80E is a very rugged platform but it's not unbreakable. Neither is a Powerglide or TH400.
I ran into a buddy and fellow car enthusiast during tx2k13 In houston and told me about North Texas Converters.
These guys gave me a full scoop on their work and are also just a drive up the road from me.
I am also being challenged to break the transmission, once its put together in my ride, so stay tuned, all is coming together very quickly, and the bird will be tearing up the streets before you know it.
Take care all,
