Default Tuning for Sy3500

What tuning is going to be needed for my yank when it arrives. I spoke with the installer and he far from instilled confidence when it comes to the tune. He seems to think I should drive it before I decided if it needed tuning. The drive to the shop is well over an hour and I was hoping to have it all completed in one trip. Any advice or information you guys could help with. BTW its a bolt on 99 with 323's and street tires...thanks

You won't need tuning.

Throw in a cam package then get the tuning.

Anyhow I opted to go for tuning when I did my converter install, but the main reason was because I already had headers on the car. Also wanted to do some shift points, TM, and whatever else is need for a converter install. Also might want to take care of P0757 while your at it, it gets annoying....I have to go back to the shop one of these days and get that code taken care of

Most of the time you don't need tuning. Sometimes you need shift point adjustments. I would not worry about tuning until it has been in your car for a while and the computer has had a chance to learn.

Yep, with a '99 TM should not really be an issue, mainly it's just the '01 and up cars that have huge TM issues after TC installs. '98 to '00 cars have very few tuning issues after TC installs, as Ragtop said maybe just a shift point adjustment. That's all mine needed when the car had just bolt-ons and I put my SY3500 in.

thanks for the help guys, for some reason i thought a tune was needed for anything over a certain stall number. SLP's long tubes will be bolted up as well at the same time as the convertor and cooler. Maybe Ill just have them tune the car for a few more ponies. Thanks again

As the guys have said, you should be good to go with the 99 PCM because torque mamangement is not quite as harsh as it is for us 01 guys. I've been through the 3.23, SLP LTs and SY-3500 combo and that was enough to trigger TM in an '01, but I think you'll be OK.

I would save the tuning dollars for the heads and cam, or order LS1-Edit latter on and do the TM delete yourself and have them use your copy for tuning when you get ready to tune.

Give yourself 2-4 days to adjust your ears and foot to the new combo and that's all the tuning you'll need. Then go Nitto shopping.

On giving it more thought. When I had my SY3500, I had to raise the idle a little . Probably due to a higher stall not creating as much load. As has been said, drive it a bit first, you might want to make other changes.

1. Add 50 to 100RPM to the idol.
2. Remove Torque Management.
3. Shorten the shift times.
4. Press accelerator and smile.

You WILL need your shift points adjusted with that high a stall, and possibly raise your idle.

Check my sig as i am running almost the same s/u.

I had mine custom tuned only because i have a guy that will do mine for the life of my car.
gears,Vert's,Cam's.. guess i'm lucky like that.

Anyway, prior to the tune my car did throw the "slip" code.
Man you will love that converter!!! & yes you will need some nitto's.
I put new Kumho's all the way around prior to the vert install & the rears are smokn!!!

Good luck.. Good choice!
