Was just wondering if its possible to use the 05 valvebody in my 98 transmission. Or maybe use the parts from the 98 trans to rebuild the 05 and use it on my 02 ls1 swap? Whats the diffrence in the trannys and can i use the 05 in my 02 ls1 swap. Thanks

A 2005 Valve body works perfectly in a '98 trans. No mods needed.
There is no "major" difference between '98 through '06 for all 4l60E with the 300mm input shaft (for LS engines).
However, GM strengthen the 4L60E a bit around 2003 for the LS2 engines. In particular the breakage-prone Sunshell was strengthened and heat treated. It would be even better if your '05 is a 4L65E, but there is no way to tell before you opened it up and looked at the planetaries.
If the '05 needs a rebuild, at least use a 4l65E kit (even if it is a 4L60E) because that will include a 7 friction 3/4 clutch.

thanks man, i called a transmission shop today and they said that it wont work due to the webbing on the valvebody is a bit different and the selenoids are different, i doubt the selenoids are different, not so sure bout the webbing part. I do plan on taking 05 4l60e apart to see why my truck only had reverse and no foward, (maybe foward sprag?) hopefully i can get more info on this.

I would need to check my notes, but IIRC I swapped between a '99, a '01 and '10 4L60E cases last year and always used the same '06 valve body on them with perfect results. Someone correct, me but I don't think there are any webbing differences between '98 and '06. Sure, GM made tiny changes to some of the valves and springs for different applications and years, but nothing significant. Also drilling the separator plate for faster shifts is a big part of installing a shift kit and I can help you with that.
Most transmission shops want to rebuild to factory specs and are not going to experiment with their customers cars.
Note: there are differences in '96 and earlier valve bodies as GM switched to PWM for the TCC and made changes to the solenoids and valves. I don't know the details as I avoid any pre '98 trans and all those early changes made transmission builders very gun-shy about mixing parts from different years.
