Default 4l60e problems

My 4l60e will not move in over drive or drive. With the shifter in D or OD it acts like neutral, no idle change, no pressure change.
Reverse feels fine and exhibits the normal 150ish rpm drop.
If I start in 1st I can manually shift 1 2 D OD.

Once I get it into OD and let the car coast down to where it should down shift into 3rd, it will act like neutral.

Those sound exactly like the symptoms of a failed forward sprag.
In [D1] and [D2] the overrun clutch is applied and and gives you forward drive (although it will slip under high throttle); then [D3] applies the overrun clutch only in 3rd gear. While [OD] never applies the overrun clutch, 4th gear does not need the forward sprag.

Sorry, but it is time to pull the trans and get a rebuild. Where are you in Michigan? If near Ann Arbor, Haas Transmission (in Dexter) can do a quality performance rebuild and I can help you select the performance parts.

You are correct, pulled it out this afternoon and it was freewheeling both ways.
I got the "better" one all assembled and ready to install now.

I put in a new borg warner dual cage unit.

This trans had maybe 500 miles on the build.
I am using it to get by until I can buy a built unit from a sponsor

your transmission is going out!!!! best bet is to A) get it fixed soon or B) buy a 4L80E transmission! mine was doing that when I upgraded my cam the gears was going out. i have to rebuilt my 60E too many times its not worth it and they cant handle a lot either so upgrade to the 80E and enjoy your car.

The planetary gear sets?
Usually don't see them fail.

My stock sprag came apart, should not have been in there from the start.
This trans shifted well, the sprag and overrun clutches were replaced. Waiting on a pump gasket. Tomorrow I will be putting it back in.

There are plenty of fast cars running a 4l60e.
I would love a 4l80e swap, but it won't happen any time soon.
This trans will work fine until I can afford a built unit.

It broke right after this launch took place.

Hey white camaro...was there a lot of shavings in you fluid/ trans cooler? When I install my new trans and external trans cooler I wanna use the radiator cooler as well, but if there is a risk of getting a bunch of garbage/shavings in my new trans I will just run the external...trying to avoid taking radiator out, but I think I will anyway

The fluid looked new, every time I have had a trans out of my car, or the cooler out I flush it with compressed air, then clean trans fluid.

The two magnets on the bottom of the pan we pretty clean as well.

If you still have the trans open, you might want to improve the 3/4 clutch. A at least be sure it was last rebuilt with 7 or 8 friction and not the stock 6 frictions.

When I built it I used 8 high energy clutches and 7 kolene steels and a .062 snap ring. It is a pretty tight setup, right about .027 clearance.

Perfect.
Are you/did you install a shift kit?
Install a high rpm spring in the pump?
Open up the 3rd feed hole in the separator plate a bit?
