For the 1-2 accumulator, the HD2 kit uses two short springs - one on each side of the piston. This will not work with a pinless piston as the piston will bottom out before the spring would. I just use an aluminum piston in this position and pinless for the forward and 3-4 accumulators.
With two washers installed I find the HD2's 1-2 shift it bit harsh with a 2400 stall converter, but perfect with a 3600 stall converter.
The 2-3 shift can be firmed up by drilling the separator plate 3rd feed hole to .101 (or even .120) and building the 3-4 clutch with a tight clearance. However it will never be anywhere near as firm as the 1-2. The 3-4 will feel even softer - the physics of the gear ratios makes the later shifts feel softer anyway,; and a higher stall softens them too. They can still be very fast; you just won't feel it.
Do you already have the Transgo HD2 kit installed?
