Default 4l60e

Hi Everyone,

Brand new to this forum but it came highly recommended. I currently drive a 2003 Chevy S10 4.3 with a 4L60E. A couple months ago it started slipping a little bit when first taking off and it was especially bad when cold. On Friday I was travelling on the highway when all of a sudden the RPM's shot way up and there was no power. It seems as though I can start off fine and it goes through 1 and 2 fine but as soon as it climbs a bit it in 2nd it begins whine. If I manually put it in 2nd it will continue to have power.

I have searched this forum and a few others and feel I can do a rebuild if given the time and proper instructions, but from what I have seen and read, this is not one to learn a rebuild on.

I guess my choices are to try and rebuild it myself, buy a used one from a junk yard, buy a rebuilt one or have this one rebuilt. Having it rebuilt seems like the most expensive option and doing the rebuild myself the least expensive option.

Also, I will offer the following. I am in no rush, I have a couple months to get this done, not that I want to take that long but I also don't need to start on a Friday and finish by Sunday. I do not need anything other than a basic transmission, seems like a lot of people on this forum rebuild for some pretty massive HP increases.

Can anybody make a recommendation? I live in upstate NY, Albany. Anybody local that is recommended and I could trust for an honest quote?

Thanks everyone for any and all responses...

Only if you have all the special tools already and....
Only if it works!

Yes, you are correct and maybe I was hoping for a miracle.

I think I have already resigned myself to pretty much going out and buying a rebuilt one that was done by a pro. It is one of those things that I so badly want to do myself, but also am well aware that I should not attempt.

Taking it out and putting a rebuilt one in is going to be enough of a challenge. I guess I should focus on finding a reliable rebuilt transmission.

I've helped a bunch of members here rebuild their trans, successfully. If you are considering rebuilding yourself, see my post #5 in this thread:

https://ls1tech.com/forums/automatic...ild-4l60e.html

Repeating what I say there:
If you are doing this to save money, STOP! Between the cost of the special tools and my estimate that less than half of 1st time builders get a working trans, this is not a good plan.
However, if your goal is to learn about transmissions and will enjoy the process, then go for it.

If you are serious about rebuilding it yourself, I have links to parts, instructions manuals, tools and more in post #2:

Ok. I decided to go ahead and take the transmission out myself and have it rebuilt or buy a rebuilt one and keep this one to rebuild. I have a ton of time so I have been following the FSM and ran into a problem. I know someone will laugh and/or think I am some kind of fool, but here is what I did.

I was fine getting most everything off including the driveshaft, transmission mount, etc. But when I went to do the transfer case assembly, for some reason I took off the bolts that the driveshaft hook up to. When I got the bolts off and pulled back I realized it would not remove from the transfer case. That is when I realized I goofed. So, long story short I did remove the transfer case from the transmission but I am concerned about getting the transfer case back together. I can get them close but it seems as though there is something I am missing because there is about an 1/8 or 1/4 inch gap. I will post pics and would appreciate any insight someone has.

You can find rebuilds of those transmissions for 500 with yours as a core.
