Default Which 4l80?

What trans are you guys using, seems like the older 80's are about half the price of the new "LS" bell stuff.
What do you think about running the older stuff? Any major difference?
I know about the 12o'clock bolt, i'm not worried about that. been running 400's forever.
Turbo Truck @about 700rwhp'
Thanks Guys

the cooler fittings are in a different spot, the 6 o clock bolt hole and the very early ones have a odd main plug
thats about it

Mine came from a '96 truck and the 12 and 1 o'clock spots don't line up. So on the drivers side it has 3 bolts holding it in and then on the passengers side it has 2. On top of that i put a new lower converter cover so that it bolts to the trans and to the oil pan on the LS1. The older covers don't have that... They bolt up pretty much exactly the same as the older converter covers. i had originally bought one from an '08 Van but it was trashed inside about 60% of the hard parts were junk. I got a beautiful '96 trans for $200 and had my builder rebuild and upgrade it. One thing i like with the older trans is that with the cooler lines being up front instead of having one in back and one up front. This sounds like no big deal but it's a tight fit in there and with a couple 90* fittings it fits nicely. With the rear line hookups you need to do more cutting of the floor/brace. I only ended up having to cut the drivers side tunnel brace a little. Just make sure you cut high enough up the brace or your harness won't have space to get in without having tension on it. I didn't cut enough and instead of taking the trans back out i fired up the air compressor and used and air chisel and hammer to push the steel up further until i had plenty clearance

Older models typically have a 16 element sprag while later models have the 34 element sprag, which is preferred. If you're having a 4l80e built, it doesn't matter what year core since you can put good parts in any of them. The early cores do have a larger overdrive roller clutch and depending on what vehicle you're swapping it into, the front cooler lines usually fit better than the rear exit style of the later years.
