Yes, the sprag in the converter sounds like a good possibility.
Is there a way to diagnose that other than opening it up?
Not really. You *might* be able to tell with with a pump stator splined into the stator in the converter, and twisting it back and forth (you should feel it grab one way and not the other). But there is also a chance it holds from that little force of the test, but not under any significant load.

Go back to the trans shop and ask to have a mechanic connect their scanner and ride with you while you try a burnout. Monitor the commanded gear to make sure it is in 1st gear when you try the burnout.

Im gonna see if i can resurrect this thread. Still having issues and idk what mechanically would cause this. It does pretty good up past 60 but any pull before that it bogs it down really bad as soon as boost hits. same with the burnout as soon as boost comes on it will stop it from spinning.

IMO you need to install a wideband O2 sensor and have a scanner that can log the wideband A/F ratio and the ignition advance. The boost is causing something to go out of bounds; since your engine has not exploded it might be too little advance or much too rich.
