I have 2001 trans am. I have a d1sc procharger and cam to install. Ls1 engine. Probably will never never exceed 700rwhp. I currently have a stock 4l60e. What do you guys recommend?
To do it properly and reliably, it should be built by a professional who knows the proper internal mods to make them live. A general repair type transmission shop you can find on any main road in town isn't what I would recommend, but rather people who specialize in it, have put in a lot of time and effort to research, R&D and understand the trans.
We are big 4L80E specialists ourselves and fit the aforementioned bill quite nicely, but we're not the only ones out there who do it.
We do do it pretty well though , if you're interested in buying one from us give us a shout. We also have good deals on trans and converter combos.
4L80 here built by a local builder. I brought him the trans and he built it. $1700 with a shift kit setup(jakes plate) and vacuum modulator and a bunch of upgraded internals
I would think a nice built 4l60 would be good. An 80e conversion is nice but will cost more and require more effort. Ask me how I know lol. The 1st gear ratio is nice in the 60. If you don't plan on going past that power level that's my vote.
The full conversion(converter, crossmember, trans, harness etc) cost me over $3k if that's out of your budget rebuild the 4L60 twice and you'll finally be in the same price range. i personally hate fixing **** constantly so i upgraded
I run a $150 craigslist 4L80e with a transgo HD2 kit I put in and an FTI converter. The problem with 60s at that power level is (most) will blow through 3-4 clutch packs at a pretty steady rate. I know some sponsors have made them last, Sonnax has a smart input drum to make them last too but last I checked that alone is 5 bills. After I added up the prices on the sonnax drum and billet shafts my decision was easy. Personally I like the gear ratios in the 4L80e wayyyyy better than the 60.
Get an 80 built by North Texas Converter. I am a happy customer here. They know their **** and will set you up for a good price. Like said, a 60 will not live at 700hp, no way no how unless you invest a metric **** ton of money into it. Get an 80, spend some money now, then be done.
Pm me on what you have or just put it up. I need price to 34689 W/3600 converter.
I'll shoot you a PM right after I finish this post

That sounds about right if core is provided.

Not a problem at all. Most other companies have a core charge but ours is included in the price

This also sounds about right for a built 80E with stock hard parts. We can build anybody a max effort 4L60E that could hold roughly ~600ish hp reliably but that build alone is over 3,000. In fact for a few hundred more, you'd be able to buy a fully built 4L80E capable of holding well over double that horsepower.
Here's a rough price breakdown for an 80E swap, using our prices as a baseline reference. I wrote this up just for this exact question: http://northtexasconverter.com/?page_id=8242

Some shops will piece it all together for you and set it all up. We do that for anyone who requests it, though it can be cheaper for a lot of people to piece it together themselves bit by bit. Just depends on how long you can wait for the parts and how much hassle you do or don't want to deal with.

I did basically the same thing except rebuilt the whole trans with quality parts and a few internal upgrades. I used the relay mod so I can control it with the stock LT1 PCM. I needed a custom built converter anyway so I had them build it to bolt right up to stock flex plate and didn't cost anymore. It was really an easy upgrade and cost me less than a partially built 4l60e.
