Default Cam and no converter..

Alright, so here's the deal. Talking to Martin over at Tick now, he's figured out a cam for my build. It will be going into my turbo build, but plan on putting it into my N/A motor for now just to run around with some lope and more power! I'm not sure on how big it'll be, no lift or duration numbers or anything, just wanna learn more about this: Is it aboslutely necessary to run a higher stall with a cam, or is it just a racing thing? That's a lot more money to throw at the build right now that I wasn't looking forward to, haha. It's my daily driver and sees a lot of stop and go, and from what I understand the 4L80 has a higher stall already, so what's y'all's input?

Going into my 2001 2500HD 4x4, LQ4, 4L80, 3.73 gears on 35" tires (measure out to 33"). Yes, I've posted this in PT.N, just a little more lively over here!

It's actually the opposite. The 4l80 is a larger "tighter" 310mm vs 300mm in the 4l60 or 6l80. It may feel looser because of the first gear ratio of the 4l80, so maybe it's a wash. What you may experience is cam buck or surge under part throttle conditions and pushing through the brakes at idle. From what I hear it's annoying. haha

The engine will also bog under high throttle until the engine gets into the 3000 rpm range.
If not already clear to you, will have have to get a tune immediately after installing the cam. The engine may not even hold an idle and you definitely should not try even medium throttle as the engine will be running dangerously lean with a stock tune and a hot cam.
Have the tuner increase the TCC apply speed to 50 mph (corresponding to about 2200 rpm) or the engine will buck/surge when the TCC locks up.

Yeah after I throw the cam in I'll get it on the trailer with the tractor and take it to get tuned. It won't be anything outrageous, just don't wanna hurt my driveability. Truck never sees over 3,000 unless I'm getting on it!

Until you tell us the cam's numbers, it is almost irresponsible to give any more input.
With your 33" tires and 3.73, that is the same as a 2.94 with typical 26" tires. Since you say you rarely go over 3000 rpm, I would just go with the stock converter for now.
Unless you cam specs are for 3000+ power band.

Sounds like a waste of time/money. As said, it's hard to tell what it will do without knowing the specs, but most turbo specd cams don't "lope" much at all.
