4L80E? Or anything strong
The only drawbacks to using a 4L80E in your car would be the electronics. You could get a stand alone computer to shift it but they are expensive (close to $1000), or you could get a TransGo shift kit that converts it from electronic shift to full manual shift and no computer, Not sure if it retains lock up.
Plus a 3600 converter for a 4L80E is going to run over $1000 too.
And for a general idea a core 4L80E thats not guaranteed rebuildable goes for $300-$400. Around here anyway, compared to $40 for th400's, 700R4's etc.
So a built one (or even rebuilt stock) is going to cost close to $2000+.
The rear gear train is almost identical to a th400 up to '99, in '99 the gears were made a little stronger.
Don't even think of getting a '91 or '92, they are junk. Get a '97 and up, easily identified by the cooler lines, one in front and one towards the middle of the trans, not in the regular location.

my experience is with a built $2000+ 4l60e and a stock 4l80e(+shift kit). the 4l80e is stronger and cost less. a used 4l80e is around $1000 with a 3 month warrenty at a junk yard. then another $1000 or so to get it in. It would be easy to get the tranny into a 1/2ton 2wd truck for $1000 but i am not sure about into a car.
here is a page for a 4wd truck that i put together. it doesn't really apply to you but you might find it interesting. http://www.neufamily.org/4l80e/4l80swap.html

BUT I think (not knowing the specifics of your car) you could use the wiring for the same type of car you have that came with a 4L60E and it will have all the right wires, harnesses and plugs in almost all the right places.
The 4L60E to 4L80E plugs are almost identical except the 60 has two extra wires.
I'd go with that.
