Default 4L80E core value?

So I looked at a used 2004 4L80E today that is described as a good used unit. It was complete with the torque converter, speed sensors, range switch and aluminum dust cover. Looked decent but you could tell it had miles on it as the output shaft seal is cracked and leaking and the pan gasket is leaking as well. The fluid was very dark, not jet black but definitely dark so I'm sure it needs a rebuild. My question is this: What is a fair price to offer the seller? His asking price would be fair for a used unit that's ready to go but I have my doubts that this trans is ok as. The seller told me that he has never run transmission after buying it used.

Thoughts?

I wouldn't pay more than $150 for it.

Average core price for a 2000- newer 4L80E is $350-600.

It's a CORE, No more than $300, You can count on it needing a Forward Drum & Input Shaft!

Can I ask what he is asking for it?

I average around spending $200 max for a core, I would never buy used and just throw it in unless I actually knew the history of it
Someone just gave me a 2006 unit, trans fluid looked like mud
A friend needed one to use as a display model, so I gave up a 2000 unit I had, really wanted to keep it, but turned out the case lugs were broken in it, so you never know
I don't know if they have case saver lugs for them or not
I know Jasper was charging insane core prices, prob more they wanted the old one back to rebuild

Why would it need a new forward drum?

Good luck spending less than $250-300 on a 2004+ 4L80E anywhere. If it were an early model unit I would say $150 is a reasonable range, but not for an '04+. They command a higher price almost universally.

3 out of 4 high mileage 4L80E core's I tear down have damage where the Input Shaft rides in the Forward Drum from Bushing wear.

Interesting, that has never really been my experience. I have, on occasion, seen the bushing itself more worn than I would like and replaced it as necessary, but very rarely have I seen the drum itself damaged. What are you doing to correct future wear out of curiosity? Do you see this on a particular year range?

I see it so much, I expect it. Worn Bushings is all I ever found & of course burnt Forwards most of the time. Most are '97 & up units with the "Long" Center Support Bushing, Late as '05.

Default Thank you

thanks to everyone who had replied, I appreciate it! One more question: is there any significant difference between a 2002 model 4L80e (2HPP) and a 2004 model 4L80e (4MCP)?

The 04 used a diff force motor, has a diff plug on it-it seems the tail housing also used a diff bushing, maybe a thicker one
This is what I noticed when I rebuilt an 04 unit-there may be other minor changes, but there wasn't any written lit. at the time.
I had trouble finding a rear bushing for the tail housing, I think I switched it to an earlier one. The book listed a bushing one for 04, but nobody had one
