Default 4l60e problems

Ok long story short my transmission shifts great for maybe the first 20 mins of driving then i lose every gear forward as well as reverse. So after reading here first step i found is change filter and look for problems. so i have the pan off now as well as filter. fluid looked nice and red. but the bottom of looks nasty. like really fine sand but metal. filter looks ruff. so what is an acceptable amount of nastyness lol

How long do you have to leave it off before driving again? Changing fluid and replacing filter will buy you a little time but the damage is done already and a rebuild will be needed. The filter is most likely plugging up with all the material in pan and cavitating the pump causing the no moving condition. As soon as you shut it off the matetial falls off filter and allows you to drive a little more until it clogs again.

I've ate more than my share of 4l60's. Ive nursed trannies along for this very prob until another trans could be found. Filter and the cheapest dex3 you can find will get you a few weeks if you dont beat on it at all.

Im giving the 4l60 one more shot then its glide or 400 time.

Yeah, at this point you should replace the filter and the 4 quarts (or so) of fluid you have already drained. Just use cheap Dexron 3. Keep in mind the trans and converter hold about 12 quarts, so the 4 quarts you drained from the pan is only 1/3 of the total fluid.
Therefore you might need to repeat the filter replacement and another 4 quarts in a few weeks.

Take it easy on her. There is likely very little friction material left. Be on the hunt for all your swap parts because you'll be needing them soon.
