Thanks man I appreciate the info on that. Hopefully it won't cost me much if any on the 60ft and will help out acceleration between that and the 1/8th.

The gear swap will pick up ET in the 1/4 and 1/8th mile. Put the sonnax drum in it too and the 4L60e is pretty stout. Cost some money but it works plus doesnt shock the tires as much off the line. My car picked up.

The sonnax drum holds more clutches plus the top ring bolts on with 15 allen headed bolts so its strong and ridgid unlike the big snap ring that flexes in stock application. It eliminates the flex so the 3-4 clutches live. I had a Century built 4L60e that did NOT last one race and I made 3 nitrous passes and the 3-4 clutches and drum were toast. I had one built by Houston Automatic Trans that lasted 3 years and was still in good shape but worn when I freshened it up. I put the sonnax drum in it and she has held up well so far. Several 1/8th and 1/4 mile hits on a 200 shot. Ran over 130 in 1/4 and over 100 in 1/8th. Car is 3690 lbs without driver. Tank

Default 4l60e Revised gearing...

I'm in the same camp as many others. I had the revised gearing installed at the same time as rear double adjustable AFCO shocks. Because I did two things at once it is difficult to say what really contributed to the improved 60 ft times. Before the gearing and shock changes I was running 60 ft in the mid 1.40s. After the changes I was running low to mid 1.30s on way to 9.61 @ 141 in 3900 llb car. Car is 815 rwhp on 300 shot. I do think it has helped get my heavy car moving without shocking the tires. P.S. I'll give a shout out for Performabuilt Transmissions. I am currently running their Black Edition 4L60e. Previously I ran their Level 3 4L60e with Smart Drum upgrade and it really worked well. Only reason I upgraded is shipper lost my tranny when I shipped it for refresh after 2 seasons of racing. Allan at Performabuilt is a stand-up guy who will go above and beyond to make sure his customers are happy before and after the sale!

Yep, 4l60e's are the best. Ask everyone that has fried the 3-4 clutch pack in almost every LS powered car ever sold.. even still stock ones driving around. They'll all tell you how great the 4l60 is

You coulda just bought a good runner TH400 for $500 and put a reverse manual valve body in it, it would have held through all of that abuse in a 3700 lb / 130mph car.

But im not knocking for people for wanting to keep the 4 speed. To me though, I have better things to throw away my money on.

My car is full weight spare tire and jack SSLE SLP car with CME. 3 point subframe connectors plus aftermarket torque arm and trans crossmeber and bracket with 2 dope bottles, stand alone, electric cutout etc etc etc is heavy. The car weighed 3410 without any mods done to it. Ice cold ac and stereo cruise control and drive it croos country if you want. Unfortunately they are heavy unless you chop alot out.

No doubt but I drive this car all over the place and the 3 speed sux to drive around. 4speed with a lock up convertor is very nice to drive and gets fuel mileage. Not getting anything with a 3 speed but the 400 is alot stronger true.

Some of us have the money and your not buying a good T400 for 500 either. Plus you gotta get a convertor too. the lock-up is like stock on the highway. Two different worlds.

I guess you have no experience with a 4L60e or anyone that does

The stock 4l60e does more then fine behind a stock ls1 and even with more power added.

From what I see the problems start with generic shops doing poor $1000 rebuilds.

None at all since mid 2000's when I got sick of killing 3-4 clutch packs. My last ever 4l60e that was behind my head/cam ls1 is still thrown outside in the rain. All the good bits that arent broken are still inside it.

Only comment I can make is that 4l80e I put into my vehicle weighs somewhere around 200lbs, and felt like 250 to walk around with. I could barely lift it into the trunk, and I pull 250 pretty easy in the gym multiple times.

That thing is now the belly of a beast. I mean, I could just go on and on about how heavy it was. Every person I meet now, I am like, "man, that trans is heavy" I was in the store the other day, inline buying bread, and I turned to the woman behind me and I was all "you know the transmission they put in the silverado? The escalade? The tahoe? Yeah mine is even bigger and heavier than that."

fun times

Hahah that's funny. One reason I decided to keep the 4l60e in the belly of the beast.

Just an update for anyone looking to change the 1st and 2nd gear ratio in the 4l60e with the planetary. I did this along with new heads and cam. I don't have any concrete testing to say it made the car any faster at the track or hurt the 60ft at all. My guess it didn't have much effect on either. I will say if you have a lot of rear gear its not a bad idea to switch. Or if you have a light car or if you have traction issues. Heavy cars might want to stick with the 3.06 1st gear
