Default Question about Circle-D higher stall and towing.

OK guys, So I would like to go with a Circle-D High Performance 300mm 2400-2600 rpm stall Converter to match my new cam for my 4L70E. My biggest concern would be excessive heat since I tow on a regular basis. I have been told to stick with the stock size converter, 300mm, for towing heavy. I guess it uses a larger lockup clutch or something.

I currently use a 40k Cooler with my Sonnax 4L70E which does an awesome job at keeping my trans under 190 degrees. While towing, temps stay at/under 187 and normally (Not Towing) see temps around 135-150. I tow 2-3 time a month through some steep grades. My truck does just fine right now towing and do not have any issues. My Travel Trailer weight comes in at 7200lbs and I am sitting about 500lbs below my Max GCVW Rating of 13,500 with fuel, cargo, and passengers. I know once the converter is locked I will be fine, but during the steep inclines I do get down to around 30mph. I currently have 4.56 gears with 34"x12" All Terrains. I do also go to the drag strip to mess around and race some friends.

Should I stick with the stock converter, which is around 1600-1800 stall, or would I be safe with the Circle-D? I talked to Circle-D about 8 months ago about this (at that time I did not have a cam swap done), I can not remember who I talked to tho, and he did say that I should be fine but may see some higher temps. I would really like to keep temps under 205 just to be on the safe side. So if anyone has any input on this, let me know.

I would suggest a triple disk converter and a tune to allow lockup in 3rd gear and at any throttle position. Most tunes do not lockup in 3rd and unlock the converter above 50% TPS to prevent damage to the lockup clutch. However a triple disk converter can handle 100% TPS. As you may know heavy-duty pickup trucks have triple disk converters from the factory for exactly these reasons.

I know you have already gotten our .02, but I think either our 265mm multi disk or a 300mm HP series converter would be just fine. You may consider adding a deeper pan to increase fluid capacity in the system if temps become an issue. Are you having any pushing at the brakes with the camshaft and the stock converter?

I do have a Mag-Hytec trans pan which holds, I think, 4 more quarts of oil. Cam has no effect in regards to pushing at the brakes. The cam is a small 212/218 .553/.553 113+2 LSA, if you didn't notice it in my sig.

I will look into the triple disk, by the sound of it it may be the way to go. What would be a good stall speed that would be good for towing with my configuration?

You'll be fine with the single disk. Two things, watch trans temps (due to the higher slip) and dont overload the lockup clutch (which means tow in tow/haul to delay engagement) and you're golden. Don't overthink this. I have the 2a 3/3200 in mine and it tows like a champ.
