Default Suspect Failing Torque Converter

I have a 2000 z/28 automatic and have a problem with it. It can start moving and even gain speed, but it will engage/disengage and finally quit engaging entirely. It initially happened on the freeway after some spirited passing, etc. Prior to the issue, I noticed an intermittent scraping noise at idle, in park and neutral, but it started doing it in Drive, too. Since it happened in Park, I figured it could be Torque Converter or Pump issues, but the slipping was either unrelated to the noise or the slipping was part of a Torque Converter problem. Could someone help me figure this out? I don't want to shell out for a transmission if it's just the TC, but don't want to drop the tranny twice, if it's not. Everything is stock and has about 200k miles on it.

TIA
jeff

I haven't done anything to it for quite a while. I'm just trying to see if there is a symptom specific to failing converters. I'm pretty sure the fluid level was one of the first things I looked at, but it's been so long that I think I'll look again.

I should probably try that. Are you saying that I'll definitely see trash in the pan if the trans failed?

Oh yeah, most definitely. Take a picture of what you find and post it and they can most likely pin point where the problem is.
