Default Calling all 4l80E experts!

Ok, I need some advice. Putting together an LQ9 and 4l80. Put them together last night and I didn't get the converter all the way on. I started bolting them together and relised the problem. I had about a 1/4 gap around the bellhousing to go before the engine and trans were mated together. Did I screw up the transmission pump?

It's a high possibility if you torqued on the bellhousing bolts

Never got them all the way torqued. Still had about 1/4" to go.

If you didn't apply pressure to the pump gear, Your probably OK. But I couldn't guarantee it.

most likely you damaged pump. if the tc was already flat against the flywheel and you were still torquing down you ruined it. if it didnt lock up you may be ok. ususally you wont be able to turn it anymore if you did. if its free you still got a chance but i might would pull it apart and inspect it

I SERIOUSLY doubt that you hurt the pump, especially since you didn't try to start the car with it like that. All that happened was the converter sat on top of the pump gear tangs.... which is why you had the 1/4 inch gap. If you were to measure the tangs on the crescent gear.....its roughly a 1/4 inch. You're fine man, seat the converter and carry on.

not true at all. helped a friend install his 4l80e and he didnt have converter all the way on, starting tighting it down and relized it was touching flywheel already. pulled trans back out and you couldnt even turn the shafts they were locked. the pump was complelty destroyed. it didnt take much to mess one up.

I agree, it doesn't take much to break the pump when putting the trans and engine together by not properly seating the converter.
