Picked up this 2002 TA, got it started, drove it around the block. Pulls strong in first and second, shifts really hard (was modified by someone). Either between 2nd and 3rd it just doesn't shift or shifts in 3rd and just starts revving up and not pulling. Not sure if anything I can check first before throwing it in the shop for a rebuild. Maybe worth getting a used stock trans from ebay for roughly $400 plus install $450 and if going used route, can I or should I use same TC?
how many miles on the car? also check the fluid level (while idling) as well as coloration. was/is the vehicle modded?
Has under 50k, car is definitely modded. I know trans was programmed to shift real hard and if I drive it real slow, 1st gear it almost wants to rip the floor from under the car, second same, then I feel a shift type of bump and it starts revving up. I checked fluid briefly, but car was only running for a minute. I'll let it run 10 min, then check while running. Could it be 3rd gear is out (not sure how trans functions I think there is some kind of math with gear packs) or would be maybe some solenoids or something (I just know random parts in there). Also, thinking maybe the car wouldn't pull at all if trans fluids were low?
I generally check the simple stuff first before thinking/planning for the worse. I hear that 2-3 shifts go bad in the 4L60e which is the 3/4 clutchpacks in some way? I am a noob when it comes to transmissions.
If this is correct, sounds like my situation and there is no way I'm dropping trans by myself, on the floor nor rebuild it myself. Wish I had a place and knowledge to do this.
Now I just need to figure out where to buy the 3/4 clutch pack and the 3/4 piston. Also, how in the world will I pull this damn thing out by myself on the damn floor. Other than that, I'm pretty excited to pull the trans apart. Wonder if I should replace anything else while I'm in there.
