Question trans assembly lube

Hi Guys
Have been reading posts for a while and think im nearly ready to attempt my 1st 4L60e rebuild
My problem is in New Zealand none of the local shops stock trans assembly lube say to just use engine assembly lube, is this ok or would petroleum jelly work better. Have trans mounted on a engine stand and was also going to put some fluid in and rotate when all done to ensure everything covered in fluid (including floor) 4l60e not as common over here and parts are expensive.
would just like to thank the guys that freely give out there years of knowledge and time to help us 1st timers.

With screen type filters.....You can get away with petroleum jelly, With "Felt" style filters.....The odds of it plugging are to great for me to recommend using it.

I would highly recommend some SPX-Filtran TransJel!!!

To be honest, no assembly lube whatsoever is needed. Not really sure why people use it, my tranny isn't a 4l60..... but I've been in mine 3 times, and have yet to use any. And none of the times were wear related/bushing issues. Just use whatever atf you plan to use.

Not sure if you have seen it or not but if you use Transjel or petroleum jelly, use Dexron 3 or equivalent. Dex 6 wont dissolve it and you will have globs of jelly in the screens when the fluid is cold.

Brian, is there an article on this? Or, was this personal experience? I've got an '06 4L65E and use Dex VI. I used assemblee goo when I did the shift kit in it (haven't needed to do a rebuild yet) and didn't seem to have any issues.

Vaseline and trans fluid mixed on the base of an L&P can to approximately the viscocity of Manuka Honey.....you won't need much....

Yeah, Its really more of a "parts alignment holder" than an assembly lube. Very little is needed. I used petrolatum because I get it from work. It thicker and holds better than petroleum jelly and you can use even less of it but jelly should work fine in a pinch. Chapstick should work too.

Thanks for the great info, I will only use jelly sparingly when needed. petroleum jelly melts at 99deg f so should blend in pretty well, will do a filter and fluid change after a couple of test drives just to be sure. my biggest problem now is cost of shipping parts to NZ sonnax wide sun gear bush $7 + $27 shipping and thats US dallors = NZD $46 for 1 brass bush, wish i could just pop down to parts store and pick 1 up.
literally cant afford to get it wrong and have it fail.
