Default Burnt 3/4 Clutch's 4L80e

Hey guys,

I installed a level 5 4L80E from NTC that I got from a friend into my Camaro. The car has been on a 4l80e for years but we put this one in because it was better built and has a transbrake. My question is can the trans burn up the clutches in the trans due to the shifter not being properly aligned? Meaning that the valve sliding in the valve body is not fully engaged into the proper gear?

The car shifted insanely hard compared to the trans what was in the car so I backed the line pressure off a little bit in idle regions and cruising. The car shifted fine for the 50 miles and then started shifting super slow into 3rd gear and now it wont go into 3rd gear at all. Reverse gear also seems to slip a little bit as well. I pulled the dipstick and the fluid definitely smells burnt.

I will check the rooster comb later as well to see if there is any slop in it.

Bye Bye direct clutches. the 80e is not like the 60e with a single shard clutch pack for 3/4.

The direct clutches are used in 3rd and reverse...if its slipping in both of those, that's probably your problem. Manual valve bodies and transbrakes often block the accumulators which is why it was probably shifting hard. Mix that with a lack of a wave plate and it's going to be aggressive for sure.

Why are you blaming the shifter when you said you played with line pressures? Did you use a gauge when making these changes or just knock a certain % out of the table?

Because the shifter wasnt engaging D when it was showing D inside the car. I would click it down to get it to engage D. I understand know why you say the trans would shift harder with the transbrake. I took a percentage out of the trans but it was not any less than what Holley has in for there base 4l80e tune.

Do you have a reference for what the pressures should be at idle in P or D so I can check it when I get the clutches repaired if thats the case. Thanks!

I would suggest getting a proven transbrake that works. They had issues with theirs.

Would you be willing to go through this trans and install your brake on it? What would the turnaround time be and cost?

Last NTC I was in wasn't very pleasant. Hopefully yours isn't as bad.

I agree what has already been mentioned. Shift linkage needs to be checked and there should of been a pressure gauge on the trans when adjusting line pressure. Unless its fixed.

NTC used Chinese made parts and their quality of work had proven to be junk.

I would prefer to start with a fresh core.

Your shifter has to be adjusted correctly.
