4L60E, 4L80E, or TH400
The car sees less than 1000 miles on it a year, less than 4 track visits a year, and I do like driving it on the highway above 70 mph. I currently have 4.10 gears in an S60 with an S-trac. I need a new converter for sure, and right now I'm around 640hp to the wheels with the N2O. Eventually I'll have 1200 hp at the flywheel with a turbo setup. So here's my options.
1. Edge will repair the 4000 stall converter for $130 + shipping them my old one. Then if the damage to the performabuilt stage 2 trans is mild, a simple flush could be all it needs.
2. Performabuilt will change my lvl 2 into a lvl 5 black 4l60e for $2600 + shipping. I then will go with a new converter, like FTI or Yank, so figure $800 more so $3400. I'm told by performabuilt that no one has broken this trans and they are rated for 1000+ HP.
3. 4L80E level 5 electronic controlled for $4100-$4500 depending on if I go with RPM, Rossler, Jake's etc. Then $800-$1000 for the converter, plus I'll have to buy things like cross member, electronic harness, driveshaft etc which I'm not sure how much adds to the cost. $700+ I'm thinking.
4. TH400 for around $3100 with transbrake and rmvb. Plus $800 converter and also I'll have to buy cross member, electronic harness, driveshaft etc @ $700+ and I'll also have to put in 3.42's and 28" tall tires (i have 26's) and that STILL means 3300 RPM at 70mph which sucks.
Option 1 is cheapest but only a bandaid.
Option 2 is 2nd cheapest and the best option IF the trans will hold the power as stated. Transbrake is another $800
Option 3 is the most expensive, but more durable than option 2. Transbrake is another $800.
Option 4 is the most durable, but will suck on the highway with no OD. Also no lockup.
I'm leaning towards option #2.
What would you do in this situation?
With that being said, I’m going to choose your second option because I believe it’ll hold your power level. Also, I run an FTI hard 4,000 and love it.
