Default Kevin @ TCI, 4L80-E TC

Kevin,

I'm itching badly for a converter for my 4L80-E.
I used to run a 10.5" lockup converter with the built 4L60-E I used to have. It stalled about 2900-3000RPM with my motor.
The motor is putting out around 600ft/lbs at the crank.
The cam specs are 267/279 @ .505/.531 (1.6:1) LSA 114
Heads are 64cc, 2.02" Int, 1.6" Exh. 200cc intake ports
Powerband comes in about 3000 and I'm shifting at about 5300 right now
My Tahoe weighs close to 6000 pounds.

Compared to the deaper first gear of the 4L60-E combined with the 3000RPM-stall torque converter, my truck has lost all its violence off the line with the lame stock 13" converter stalling at a measly 1800RPM and the shallower gearing of the 4L80-E. I knew this would be the result but a converter wasn't in the budget at the time of the swap.

I want back fun launches like this with the 4L80-E:

I can't even spin the tires off the line anymore without cheating!

You guys build two converters for the 4L80-E.
I don't think the Saturday Night Special would be enough stall RPM for me at 1800-2000. I'm already getting that..

As you probably recall I have a TCI TCU running this thing and it's programmed not to abuse the converter clutch.

Would the 10" Street Fighter part number 242930 be too much converter for a truck this heavy? I'm looking for about 3000RPM or slightly more stall speed with rubust enough lockup for 3 tons of grocery getting. Heat, longevity, and streetability are issues I need to consider. Also I saw a note on the website about drilling holes in the flexplate? I'm looking for bolt-up, the flexplate I've got is conventional GM dual-pattern. I'm using 3 bolts now.

I see these are $659 at Summit and appear to be readily available.
What do you think?

Thanks for your opinion and your time.

No, not yet. I thought I'd make contact here first on it.

They have a form on the website to fill out with vehicle specifics where they'll come back with recommendations too.

Hi James,
The 242930 SF converter will work great in your application. It's very streetable. It should flash to 3200 in your heavy truck. I feel comfortable that the lockup clutch will hold up fine in your application. You may have to drill out one of the flexplate holes. Typically, two of the three mounting holes are 1/2" and the third hole is a .400" slot. You'll have to drill the slotted hole out.

there are ratios for the 4L80 that are about the same as the 4L60 3.00/1.57

I don't think it's possible to change the ratio constants in the TCU for different gears, is it? If the controller being used with any E-auto could be programmed for the gear ratios it would work. I'm honestly happier with the closer ratios in the 80 than I was with the wider range of the 60. The 1-2 shift in the 60 where it dumps you totally out of the powerband really sucked!

Hi James,
What John is saying, is that he makes different gear ratios for the 4L80E, including a 3.00/1.57 as well as a 2.40/1.40. You have to change the planetary out of your transmission for one of his planetarys. We make a 2.75 low gear set for the 4L80E, but I'm like you...I prefer to have the close ratios and a low rear gear.
