99 Trans Am Shaking in Overdrive
So, picked up my car from the shop today after they shimmed the torque converter for me. It is a PTC 3500 stall. I drove it for around 500 miles with the flex to converter clearance at 1/4". Seemed to not have any problems except for a faint vibration in 4th gear. They added shims to bring spacing between 1/8 and 3/16 which is what you want or so I hear.
When I got it out on the road, it felt like the whole car had a nasty shake only in 4th gear (which is when the converter locks up). The shake gets worse when you hold the throttle open but not allow it to shift out of 4th.
I felt a faint vibration before the shimming work was done, but not a total shake like this.
My thoughts are yoke, drive shaft, pinion angle, trans/torque arm mount could be problems. But I can't look past the fact that it got worse after the shop did what it did.
Unfortunately, I have to drive home an hour, since I picked up from shop and went to celebrate Thanksgiving with family. There are no tools here to investigate the problem.
Does anyone have any ideas here? Wonder if I can make it home driving an hour? The car is lowered so it makes it extremely difficult to load on a car hauler if the problem explodes on the way home.
Check the driveline angles as well since your lowered. The lighter converter will not absorb as much vibration as the big heavy stock one and so that is likely why you are experiencing the vibration now and didn't notice it before the converter was installed.
