I was not aware the rear endplay could be checked independently. Is that done the same way as the front ? Just with the case upside down and yanking on the output shaft ?
What front clearance is good ? The manual says .015-035.

rear endplay is essientially non-adjustable with the 60e. And it's usually only ever way out of spec if you are using the incorrect bearing. Which you already know because you've linked a good article up above.
.020 is looser than I usually run, but it is within spec. You can change the washer under the bearing on the input shaft/drum to change front endplay.
I usually have plenty of extra washers so its easy for me to pick and choose...if you don't have extra laying around....020 will be fine.

BW frictions are plenty capable.
GPZ are good for sure, but I've seen no significant performance benefit vs the BW. I consider them directly interchangeable in my shop

The borg warners are good too no doubt. I used those until I came across the GPZ. From what i understand the GPZ friction material is the same stuff used in the Z pack. I used to like the z pack for light duty stuff but i've come to the conclusion that you cannot get any heat in them or they will cone.

OK I adjusted the front endplay to .015.

The rear endplay is .034". Im guessing this is a function of the distance between the mainshaft shoulder and snap ring groove ? And the stack up of all the gears/hubs/thrust bearings that sit between ?. No "selective fit" parts/washers in there.

I have the band clearance at .055". I feel if I try to grind it some more while maintaining the required spherical tip I may go too far.

The recommended rear section end-play for the THM700-R4/ 4L60, 4L60E, 4L65E, and 4L70E from Sonnax ranges 0.0050" to 0.0350"

Ten Thousandths (0.0100") selective shims are available from Sonnax to adjust rear section end-play.
They are combined with the case Torrington bearing under the rear planetary ring-gear.

A general rule to follow in My shop for rear section end-play is three thousandths clearance for every torrington bearing and component used to measure the end-play.

-Older 4L60E Units will have 5 Torrington bearings.
-Newer 4L60E Units with have a 6TH Torrington bearing under the front planetary ring-gear.
-Some 4L60E Units that have the Sonnax Smart Shell installed will have 1 more Torrington bearing added under the reaction shell.

-With 5 Torrington bearings I am for a Minimum of 0.0150" clearance
-With 6 Torrington bearings I am for a Minimum of 0.0180" clearance
-With 7 Torrington bearings I am for a Minimum of 0.0210" clearance

For the front section end-play I would add 0.0060" minimum additional clearance for two more Torrington bearings.
In the RARE scenario that you are building a Unit where someone had replaced the original thrust washer between the pump and the reverse input drum with a Torrington bearing... Add 0.0030" more. Note: I only see this once in a blue moon from builders claiming to have a "SUPER-DUPER" Full-Roller Unit.
