Default What temp is too hot for a powerglide?

I've got a 180 straight cut gear glide w/ 9.5 inch ptc convertor they speced for my car. Built 6.0 turbo. Have a big derale trans cooler with fan mounted in the recessed area under passenger seat. 2002 trans am. I am seeing 200- 210 degree temps. Fan is working on cooler...how hot is too hot?
Thanks Guys

That's a little hot . My power glide after an hour cruising at 70 mph aka 3900 rpm lol stays around 170 ish. Making hits on the street I'll get to 180 max . This is with 2 coolers in series

Is the line big enough? The stock fittings are only like 3/8's need about 1/2 or 5/8's to get full flow.
I use Setrab coolers, and fit the biggest one there is room for in the car..

Good luck..

not sure of the fitting size but pretty sure we used -6 an line. space is at a premium, thats why this ones under passenger seat...lol. I'm sure I could mount a non fan version somewhere else. would it make sense to add one like that and still use the derale under the passenger seat? maybe make the derale w/ fan the last in the loop before it goes back into trans? The trans temp is the only thing thats worrying me about driving this thing for any distance.

Depends on where you are measuring the temperature, if it's on the cooler feed, then that's fine. If it's at the pan, that's a touch warm.

If a stock Powerglide case is being used, there is only so much cooler circuit flow that can be gained.

The stock cases have very small cooler circuit ports.
The case has been made with 1/8" size NPT (Pipe thread) threads, and is very restrictive.
You could install a -12AN line to a cooler and another back again... It is not going to be enough.

If the case is of a decent casting and there is not a lot of core-shift, then the cooler port holes should close to, if not centered in the boss.
All cases with cooler port bosses in good shape and having near center holes should be drilled for larger adapters.
Increase the hole sides up to 7/16" (0.438") for a 1/4 NPT (Pipe thread) tap.
Ideally you will wish to use a tap with plug type starting threads.

Now obtain new adapters for 1/4 Pipe to your desired type and size of cooler line.
-6AN cooler lines would be fine for most applications.

There is no reason that the transmission fluid need to ever be over 180*F.

I personally like to set up the units to be cooled in the 160*F to 180*F window.

Were adding a plate type cooler right behind intercooler in front of pusher fan into radiator. It will feed into derale w/ fan under passenger seat then back into trans. Hopefully that will do the trick. I should know soon enough...lol
