Default Grinding noise L460E

My 1998 Z28 LS1 has 44000 miles on it.
Yesterday it suddenly started doing a sort of grinding noise when accelarating on first gear & reverse. Sounds like sound is coming from rear axle, but since it stops immediately when it shifts to 2nd gear it seems like the gearbox. Anyone experienced this?

Does the noise change at all moving forwards vs moving in reverse?

No, as I can hear it sounds pretty much the same going forward in 1st and reversing. The funny thing is that it really sounds like the noise is coming from the rear axle somewhere, but disappears as soon as it shifts to 2nd.

I talked to a transmission guy today, he said it´s without doubt the planetary gear on the trans. So I´m in for some repair work...
