Default 2-4 servo / filter extension ques

Hi all,

Let's see...transmission's back together, except for the 2/4 servo...had a question about that one (and the filter extension)

Here's the servo all laid out.
I used some pieces from Transgo for this.
In the 2nd apply piston I cut the 4 notches Transgo recommended, and added the blue and black springs to the piston, in addition the the existing grey spring...and put in the coil separator thing. Good to go?
Are there sealing rings that go in those notches indicated by the red arrows?
To check the clearance, you install the servo w/o the seals, install the retaining ring, and push the servo inward until it stops and see what the micrometer says? Aiming for .040 to .070 clearance..bit of a range.

This is the filter extension that came with the deep pan...when I pushed the small end into the seal below the pump I must have pushed too hard cuz the small end went through the seal and struck the pump surface below. Is that a problem...it seems tight enough?

Thanks for any help on this.

You have what appears to be a combination of parts and modifications from both Sonnax and TransGO.

Everything here looks good. However, be very carefull mixing and matching parts and modifications from two different parts kits.

You are missing 3 seals from the 2-4 servo pin. Shown below are two white seals that go in the grooves you pointed to, and an o-ring that goes further back on the pin.

Sonnax sells these seals as a set containing additional seals for the Sonnax second gear servo. Which you do not have.

You can also purchase those seals in a early THM700-R4 paper and rubber seal kit, or a THM200-4R paper and rubber seal kit.

Both the white seals will be present and you can find a match to the black o-ring from one of the many o-rings included in the paper and rubber kits.

I personally hate those white split seals for the 2-4 servo pin and instead use solid Teflon rings intended to be a governor seal in the THM200-4R.

Seen below.

the sonnax servo pin is also longer.....you will have to measure the servo travel to make sure it was set right

Thanks for the replies. Not fond of those split seals either...keep imagining them hanging up on the rim of the bore as they're being pushed in.
Caution on mixing parts noted...a few other pro builders have mentioned that in various threads.
Found and installed the 3 seals. Ground the pin and wound up with .050 clearance.
Another question: the 4th servo comes pictured with a black seal...use that one or the replacement blue seal that's on the original servo cover?

When grinding the pin, you must make sure that when done grinding, it is "rounded" at the tip and very smooth (like the original pin). Otherwise you could have excessive band clearance quickly. I never understood why Sonnax reintroduced these two split rings on the pin. GM did away with them somewhere around 1987. Leaks and wear in the pin bore, were very rare. To me Sonnax makes a lot of things that are solutions in search of a problem. The solid rings from a 2004R governor are a good idea, as I thought the split rings were so-so. At almost 70, I still am learning new things, and I like that.

Most of the guys who have specialized in the THM200-4R Units would be familiar with using those red solid Teflon rings for the intermediate servo pin in the 200-4R (from the governor)

However, obviously they work on the early THM700-R4 units as well before the pins changed in 86/ 87...

Since Sonnax has been offering their pin for 4L60E Units, I have another use for them.

Appreciate the direction...the knowledge and experience on here is nothing short of remarkable!
Got the tranny back together...and found the missing turbine shaft o-rings, thankfully.
Adding an cooler..still debating whether to bypass the stock cooler (think the tranny likes some heat during the cold months, so may keep the stock)
And a reman torque converter.
Goes back in the truck on Saturday...if the weather cooperates...here's what it looks like -had no way of cleaning it properly!

Use the stock transmission cooler in series with the additional cooler.

A water to oil cooler is much more efficient than an air to oil cooler.

So use them both.

Keep the trans fluid between 160*F and 180*F.
