Default Powerglide Transmission

Doing a 99 Camaro build and planning to remove all the weight I can from it. I've decided to run a glide and I picked this up yesterday for $100 which was super cheap. What all does it need take to make it handle say 850-900 fwhp? My fear is that by the time I spend all the money getting what it needs for drag racing I could have bought one already built by a professional. I have been quoted $1600 to rebuild it which includes the 1.76 planetary, deep pan, better pump and a TCI trans brake which to me sounds like a good deal.

They can go from there to about $5000. Google 'powerglide for racing'.

1.76 is stock ratio planetary for a V8. Needs a 1.80 aftermarket gearset for 900 HP.
I prefer an SFI case as well but not mandatory.
I have a stock case, 1.80 Sonax gearset, 1000-1200 HP capable Powerglide on the shelf, but it's a $2750 unit.

I've been doing some research on here and found some informative posts. I was wondering if I'd be able to run the 1.80 straight cut planetary from Sonnax in the glide so you just answered that question. BTE Racing makes an SFI bell that bolts to the pump but will most likely do the scatter shield and kevlar wrap for now.

I would highly suggest just using an SFI case from the start. By the time you spend the money on a blanket and or shield and deal with all that junk in the car you'll be money and frustration ahead using the SFI case.

I'm a dealer for BTE, Reid, and pretty much all the other companies that are worth doing business with.

I second the aftermarket case recommendation!
