Default 4l60e - transmission mounted PNP switch

hi all,

i've got a drop out ls1/4l60e from a 1999 z28 camaro in my swap. Works great, swap drives great. Starting to add "luxury" features like "must be in park to start", backup lamps, etc.

In the camaro, there was a sensor on the shifter itself that detected what gear it was in, and that was used for PNP, reverse lights, etc.

I have seen some 4l60e's with a similar sensor mounted on the transmission itself. This would be extremely nice to have in my swap, because i'm not using the camaro shifter, i'm using the shifter that came with the vehicle (volvo). In vehicles where this sensor is on the transmission, it appears to have a longer "lever" if you will that has enough room to engage both the shifter AND the gear position sensor. My 4l60e does not have this. See pics:

This is what i'd like:

this is what i have:

there is definitely not enough room there for the gear position sensor and the shift lever.

Has anyone converted this before? If so how much of the transmission has to be torn down?

Thanks!

I need to see another photo of the transmission case to see if the stand-offs are there for the Park-Neutral position sensor assembly.

If they are on the case... you would need to replace the shift-shaft with a longer one (from something like a 2004 Yukon) to work with the PNPS.

All the "removable bell" 4L60E's have bosses for the Range/PNP switch. Be sure to deburr the shift shaft before pulling it through the case!!!!!

THIS!! 100x this!
About 15 seconds with a brass brush then another 15 with some emery cloth and you'll save yourself plenty of headache. Please don't just grab a hammer and pound it through into the case

so it sounds like you guys are saying

1) if i want this feature, i have to replace the shift shaft
2) the shift shaft can be removed and replaced without completely disassembling the transmission - it just gets banged out with a hammer (after some cleaning up)?

edit, after some searching, it looks like you have to remove the pan and do some gymnastics but it seems doable. Thanks for all the input, this is really helpful! Just starting to handle to tiny details of my swap now that its running and driving.
