Default 99 Trans Am T56 to 4L80E

Good afternoon, I’m in the final stages of swapping a 4L80E in place of a T56 in my car. The T56 was toast and I had the 4L80E left over from a previous build that was parted out. I have a question about wiring in the NSS and reverse lights.!i have searched and search but all I find is people who have swapped a T56 in place of an auto. I was able to get the two switches on the brake pedal figured out. Any help is appreciated. I found a couple of diagrams on line but wiring really isn’t my strong point.

First things first.
There are quite a few threads on this forum covering the information you are looking for in similar types of swap threads.
It is worth it, to take a look through some of them.

The 1999 Pontiac Firebird/ Forumla/ Trans Am/ Firehawk/ Superhawk ETC... all used a switch assembly installed inside of the center console and was attached to the gear-selector assembly.

The switch itself would look similar to the photo below.

The gear-selector itself looks similar to the photo below.

Both of these two parts attach and operate together for the Reverse-Lights, Neutral-Safety/ Starter-Motor Interrupt, and Live-Data regarding Gear selector position.

If your plan is to retain all of, or most of, the original wiring and control modules inside this car (The BCM, IPC, PCM, etc all tie in)...
I would recommend that you try and find a used gear-selector and gear-selector switch-assembly for your vehicle.
Try looking through, or posting a "Wanted" thread in the classified sections of the forum here.
There are also F-body specialized scrap-yards around the country... look a few up; you should have no problem finding the switch assembly.

Otherwise... should the 4L80E case that you have be a 1995 or newer model...
You can install the equivalent switch-assembly on the transmission.

Switch assembly shown in photo below.

Switch assembly mounted to 4L80E; shown in photo below.

If you have a 4L80E core that is newer than 1995 and it did not originally come with/ was built with the switch assembly from the factory...
You will find that the Manual Shift Shaft will be too short... it will not protrude outward enough to pass through the switch assembly.
You will have to purchase another Manual Shift Shaft that is longer (originally intended for use with switch assembly) and install it.

Have fun!

It has been almost 4 years since I have done this and my memory is a little fuzzy. My car was is a 2002 Trans Am and the donor was a 2002 Camaro.

** Please note that the diagram of the C220 behind the right front kick panel shows to different color wires going to the H terminal. (Orange/Black and Light Green) I can’t remember which is correct but you should be able to figure it out. If you get stuck I can pull the kick panel and check.

Back-up light wires are in connector C220 behind the right front kick panel. Run the Brown wire from the G terminal and the Light Green wire from the **H terminal of the C220 connector behind the kick panel to the Park/Neutral Switch. The Brown wire goes to the C terminal and the Light Green wire goes to the D terminal on the Park/ Neutral Switch.

Dark Green and Purple/White wire from clutch pedal switch that is closed when the clutch pedal is down should be ran to Park/ Neutral Switch terminals E and F. I don’t think it matters which one goes to which terminal.

For the TCC and Cruise Control to work properly the Pink and Purple wires from the clutch pedal switch, that is closed when the pedal is up, should be run to and A4 bake light switch that is closed when the brake pedal is up. The Pink wire comes from the C terminal and Purple wire goes to the D terminal of the C220 connector behind the right front kick panel.

You need to run the Orange/Black wire from the B terminal of the Park/Neutral Switch to the **H terminal at the C220 connector behind the right front kick panel.

Run the Black/White wire from the A terminal of the Park/Neutral Switch to the E terminal of the C220 connector behind the right front kick panel.

When wiring up the Shift-Interlock solenoid you will need to run a Dark Green/White wire from the part of the brake light switch that opens when the brake pedal is depressed, B terminal to the B terminal on the Shift-Interlock solenoid. Now run an Orange/Black wire from the Shift-Interlock solenoid A terminal and tie it into the Orange/Black wire that runs from the B terminal on the Park/Neutral Switch to the **H terminal on the C220 connector. I tied it into the Orange/Black wire at the C220 connector. You will need to install a diode in the Orange/Black wire from the A terminal on the Shift-Interlock solenoid to where it ties into the C220 connector behind the right front kick panel (see diagram).

I pulled all of these wires and connectors from the A4 car that I had, especially the Orange/Black wire with the diode in it.

The small shifter cable that only moves when the button on the shifter handle is depressed goes to ignition switch or the steering column. This keeps you from being able to remove the keys without the shift lever in park. You may be able to just use the A4 ignition switch instead of replacing the whole column. I had the column so I used it because I didn’t like the lever by the lock cylinder that you have to push down to get the key out.

The image of the pedal switches is for an A4 to M6 swap so the drawing in red is backwards.

Thanks for the input guys. I did some searching of the forum and it may have a bit overloading on me to process the info. I’ll get back on the car tomorrow and post up my results. Cheers!
