Default 96-98 4l60e

hey everyone new to the forum here but im in kind of a predicament. Trans went out on my 98 k1500, got a rebuilt unit bolted it all up, went 10 miles and took a dump. So I call the guy I bought it from, he drops me off another transmission, I got home and check the ID on this one and its a 1996 2 piece 4l60e. So I call him once again and he is adamant that the 96 and 98 are the same and it will be fine after more research it seems not to be the case. So what I'm wondering is what would I need to do to make this 96' work in my 98 truck? Any input appreciated

A 1996 year unit should be fine as long as it has the correct bell-housing for a Gen I small block chevy.

What about in the valve body? I've been reading and that seems to be where the problem will be. The 96 trans also has a shallow pan. Would that be a problem other than the dipstick being too long?

The dipstick does not change with pan.
The proper fluid level is even with the pan gasket sealing surface.

So even if you have a pan that is 7" deep...the sealing surface won't change.

Valve body from 96-05 will all be compatible electronically with no changes

look at the input shaft...if the input shaft looks correct...you'll be fine to swap
if the shaft looks different, you'll have issues

what I'm saying is my factory trans that came out had a step down pan. The front of the pan dropped down an inch or so. This 96 one is flat. And the dipstick is sticking out of the tube that extra inch. And about these 3-2 forced downshifts I've been reading with these swaps, is that an earlier 1 piece problem? Or does it not exist

if the trans is a 96 and the input shaft matches. You can swap into a 98
No problem

If you've got a used trans (generally regarded as a bad idea) then put a new filter on it and when you take the pan off...put the deep pan you have on. Just make sure you get a deep filter

It bolted up just fine. Its identical to the one I pulled originally the only visual diffrence is the pan. Its supposed to be rebuilt but we all know how that goes with transmissions. Ill have it full of fluid this afternoon and take it for a test drive. I'll let you know how it goes. Oh and for the dipstick, can I just shove it down that extra inch and lock it in Place? Is it going to give me false Readings? I think that's about it with the questions. I appreciate the help everyone
