Default Co worker having transmission problems. 4l60e

Co worker of mine has a 2002 z28. Ls1, 4l60E.
He recently had a 92mm intake and throttle body installed along with some suspension items.
Now he says it bounces off the rev limiter a few times between the 2-3 shift before it makes the shift. Based off my own experience I said it's the transmission. His tuner says it's the transmission. The guy that did the transmission says it's the tune. I'm not 100% sure who did the transmission. I don't really know much about his car since we are on different shifts & he caught me at a bad time at work so we didn't get a chance to talk much.
Anyone have any ideas? Or should I come back with more information?

It could be the transmission... The clutch that needs to apply (3-4 Clutch pack) in order to shift from 2nd-gear to 3rd-gear could be worn and causing the issue.
However there are of course other possible reasons for what the issue is, other than the transmission.
More investigation/ research must be done.

With any vehicle that has electronic control and monitoring for the Power-Train...
Always start out with Diagnostic Trouble Codes, Live and History Data.

If the Automatic Transmission is suspect:

-Ensure that the ATF level is at or above the "FULL" mark, when the vehicle has completely warmed-up, while the engine is at an idle and the transmission gear-selector in the Park position.
-Next ensure that the ATF condition is not dark/ burned and/ or contains any metal/ debris.
-Next ensure that the Line-Pressure is above the minimum for every gear-range at idle and at approx. 1,200 RPM.

If the ATF condition is extremely poor and/ or the Line-Pressure is lower than specified (especially if the vehicle/ transmission mileage is over 100,000 miles)...
It is time to remove the Transmission assembly and Repair + Rebuild, or Replace.

Good luck!

I believe the tuner can see input / output speed comparisons during the 2/3 shift and if its really delayed or there is a huge variance that can indicate its a mechanical issue not a tuner issue.

I know you said you didnt get the chance to get much info, but when was the trans done? What did he do it? But im also like Vortec, checking line pressure manually would be a good start as well as checking input / output speed comparisons via data logging with HTP or the like

These cars have shallow trans pans. Overfilling by 1/2 quart has often solved this problem for other members here. Basically the trans filter sucks some air during hard acceleration. Due to the marginal 3/4 clutches and feed circuits, even a slight loss of pressure often causes slippage. As 2BFAST mentioned, checking line pressure during acceleration would be very useful information.
If the tuner is readily available and cooperative, have him reduce the WOT 2-3 shift speed by 5 mph or even more. This will ensures the shirt occurs at the specified RPM. The PCM commands the shift when BOTH the WOT Shift RPM and WOT Shift MPH are reached. Many tuners keep the WOT Shift MPH 5-10% lower than needed to ensure the shift occurs at the tuned RPM.

If this just started happening right after the intake and TB were installed I would say it’s in the tune. I’m not sure what other modifications are done but anytime you increase power the rpm’s are going to climb at a faster rate and require the shift to be commanded a little sooner to compensate for the delay between the commanded shift and shift events especially on the 2-3 shift.

He said no check engine lights, fluid is new as he changed it before winter hit. he said fluid is at the full line. Only thing done power wise was the intake & throttle body.
He is taking the car back to the tuner tomorrow morning. Transmission was done in 2018. I will show him what you guys are saying. Hopefully its nothing serious
Thanks guys

Spoke to my coworker this morning. Before he took the car back to his tuner he added half a quart of fluid to the transmission. It still bounce between 2&3. His tuner tried adjusting things in the tune but nothing seemed to help. The guy that did the transmission says to increase the rpm no more than 500. I just kinda laughed & said well I was having the same issue you are having after an intake & throttle body install, took the advice of the transmission guy & raised the rpm. And 2 weeks later the engine blew up. The transmission ended up getting pulled & returned to the transmission builder & he said the clutch packs between 2 & 3 were worn when I picked it up. I'm not saying raising the rpm caused the engine to blow up but it's kinda hard to ignore.
Now hear is another thing my coworker said. There is a 2002 camaro sitting at his tuners garage waiting to be picked up. 4l60e from the same transmission builder, same 92mm intake and throttle body, & makes about 30 more hp than what my coworkers car does but this other camaro doesn't do what my coworkers camaro does. I said get the transmission looked at before raising the rpm.
Not really sure what my coworker is going to do. Still thinking things over. What do you guys think?
Sorry for the book lol

Needs to check line pressure with a gauge in my opinion. And what the input and output speed comparison is between shifts. There is going to be a little variance there obviously but if its slipping you will see its not completing the shift therefor slipping. Other more experienced can chime in also but thats where I would start. Im leaning towards the builder.....but there again im just going off the info you provide. But thats where I would start...

+1 to BFAST's post above.

Obviously raising the engine cut-off RPM is risky and not a good solution.
Having read and posted on many similar threads here, it is a high probability it is a marginal/poor transmission build.
The tuner can easily reduce the WOT shift RPM by a bit and (as I stated earlier) the WOT shift MPH by 5-10% to ELIMINATE this problem even if the trans is slipping more than it should. Of course with a marginal/slipping trans, it will soon come back.

Ask the tuner for a copy of the tune and post it here. Many of use can interpret an a tune from HP Tuners or EFI Live. If the tuner refuses, what is he/she hiding?
