Both are OEM THM700-R4/ 4L60E family Hubs/ Ring-Gear assemblies (for the rear Planetary Gear Set).

Yes, the part in the upper portion of the image is the latest design.
The part in the lower portion of the image is the older design.

There really no difference between the 2 different version for stock/ low-power builds.
The metallurgy and heat-treatment differ between the two.

The actual "Ring-Gear" (NOT the hub) for the latest design; is of slightly inferior metallurgy... but far better heat-treatment.

The 4-pinion Planets can use either design.
However; if a 5-pinion rear Planet must be used... go with the latest design part (as it helps to lubricate the rear Planet).

I do use the actual Ring-Gear from the latest design for higher HP builds...
However, I do not find the Hub to be critical (and most often use the older hub design).

The top one is the newer part... not the other way around (you may find "either-or" in a "Later" unit depending on the engine paired with the transmission).

Still need to get the transmission built.
Life just keeps throwing sh*t at me, and I never get time to work on it. But I'll get there.
