Default 4l80e center support sits too high

Mid rebuild on a 4l80e and I cannot get the rear assembly to stack up correctly. No matter what it's sitting above the bottom of the beveled snap ring groove
I've checked obvious stuff like looking for a second thrust under the center support but still no dice.
All the hard parts are as they came out of the unit so I'm left scratching my head.
Anyone have any thoughts?

Output shaft bushing needs to be recessed. Can’t be flush or will cause your issue.

Some transmissions have a shim under the center support that looks like a lug case snap ring. Does yours have that?

Yeah I've got the thin spacer ring under the center support

Alright, with recessing the case bushing I was able to barely eek into the acceptable range for rear end play.

I came in at .006 on the dial indicator with zero shims under the rear roller bearing.

Anything to be concerned about?

I believe the Sonnax article that I read stated this should be .007" to 0.019", so just barely outside. Can you try to recess the bushing more? I was going to ask if you replaced the rear thrust washer, but seems like you rollerized the output shaft. Probably swap for a thinner washer.

Good to know, my book says .005 to .025. I'll seat it deeper and see what that does.

Thanks!

I try to keep the rear clearance to .010. The fwd hub usually needs a thicker thrust washer too.

I keep these in stock, it's made in two sizes .078 & .094

As of late, I've been seeing this issue come up often from folks on facebook where the center support doesn't sit in the correct location. Making this post so that I can reference it next time someone has the issue.

Causes are typically:

1. Small thin ring not installed or wrong snap ring placed in wrong locations
2. Incorrect year center support for the case
3. Case bushing protrudes too far into the case
4. Output shaft bearing not assembled in correct orientation.
5. Output shaft bushing not seated correctly far enough into shaft.

I recently tore down a '99+ unit that had a 97/98 sun tube in it, made a pretty good mess of the thrusts in the rear section.

I can only imaging the mix and match part builds you've come across lol. Did they at least try to put fluted bushings in it being that it was placed into a late unit? I started to document the differences in parts between the years here, but it's still a work in progress.

97/98 had fluted bushes, but they had the "short/early" sun tubes.

If you put a 99+ sun tube into any early unit the result is a big glittery mess.
