Does the "Case ID" matter when buying a replacement 4l60E case?
First, my compliments to the whole gang here on the collection of useful information you've compiled in the forum!
I've spent some time using the search function and reading through the sticky threads, and found lots of useful information that eases my journey, rebuilding a 4l60e for my Express van. But I wasn't able to find a clear answer to my current concern:
I need an empty 4l60e transmission case to replace one with a fresh rebuild that has developed a crack in the (early, one-piece) bellhousing. the housing I need to replace is a 1997, 7CJD.
Will ANY of the same-year 4l60e cases accept the internals from my current transmission, or do I need to find a case with the same case ID number as my current tranny?
To state the question in another way, what does the case id tell us: Does it describe the internals contained in the case, or does it described a difference in the case itself?

I'm no means an expert on transmissions, but learning. 1997 I believe was that transition year where they went to the removable bellhousing. There's also important changes such as torque converter material and I believe input shafts.
The transmission guys will give you more details on your question. So you are shopping for a case to swap your internals I'm guessing? Why not just get a complete unit and rebuild it? You'll need to buy gaskets, seals, o-rings, probably frictions/steels while you are in there anyway.
...not that it matters, but the 5.3 didn't show up on the vans until like 2003.
please post pictures of the crack.
Essentially you just need to make certain that the Case purchased is for a Gen-I/ II Small Block Chevrolet Engine.
The 4L60E Family Transmissions were installed behind several different Engine Platforms...
The Bell-Housing Shape and Bolt-Patterns differ from different Engine Platforms.
Also the first of the 2-Piece Cases were in the 1996 S/T Platform Trucks (Jimmy, Bravada, and Blazer).
Anyway...
Just find a Case with the correct Bell-Housing for a Gen-I/ II SBC.
please post pictures of the crack.
While I don't trust the cracking bellhousing, I do trust my internals. I've been driving with them for a decade, and all worked well until the sunshell stripped. Inside, it all looks great, with minimal wear, so fresh seals, bearings, bushings and a new hardened shell give me complete confidence in the internals. Nothing was burned inside, not even the 3-4 clutch packs that are notorious for failing. Hell, the fluid even looked clean enough after 10,000 miles that I could have put it back, so I'm happy to simply find a new home for the internal parts I already trust. I suspect the tranny was freshly rebuilt when I bought the van a decade ago. I only changed the fluid and filter once, when I replaced the engine. Sadly, the engine wasn't freshly rebuilt: it spun a main bearing on the long drive home.
