Default 4l60e to 4l80e swap

Newbie here. I’m swapping the 4l60e to the 4l80e on my obs. I keep seeing different opinions. Some say you don’t need a retune some say you do. I have a harness that I was told works for both transmissions. It has two vss plugs. Do I need to retune my ecm? It’s 2004 gen 3. Help me out.

Yes, definitely need a reflash, as each transmission is different on the ECU side.

It could be that your harness has the 2 iss sensor connections (which you need for the 4L80e), but the arrangement pinout on the big case connector is different for each transmission. You need find out which one you have setup for. LT1 swap.com has a wiring diagram of the pinout.

My 99 Silverado had a 4.3 and I swapped to a 5.3/4L80e. I really like that combination. Pretty easy/straightforward
swap.

thanks! I found that pinout and made sure the pins were correct. It seems to have already been ready for a 4l80e. I have to re program this ecm now and everything should be good.

Sounds like all you need to clarify is if your tune is for a 4L80E transmission or not. 4L60E's didn't have a ISS sensor. If you have 2 sensor connectors it may already be segment swapped for the 4L80E. Upload your tune and someone can look at it and see. I can only look at HPtuners myself.

@Tranzman I was playing around the other day on the latest version of the VCM editor for HP tuners (different laptop than the one I use for my personal vehicle which is on old firmware) and downloaded 2 stock tune files from customecm.com, one for a 4L60E with OS 12202088 (01 Firebird) and one for a 4L80E (01 Express) with the same OS 12202088. Went through the segment swap process which worked fine and it wouldn't let me save the file (just wanted to take a look at it) without asking to purchase credits first LOL. Was VCM editor always like this? Wasn't trying to flash anything, just wanted to look at the segment swapped tune in the editor.

What version VCM editor are you using?
I am using the latest 5.0.4. I can edit and save anything. You just can't flash it without paying for the credits. I have edited and saved my own segment swap file and I'm ready to flash it.

Yeah that's what I thought, that unless you flash, you don't need credits.
5.0.4 is what I was using. Wouldn't let me save the segmented swapped file and a pop up window came up asking for credits. As soon as I closed the pop up window, the file closed. Tried it 3 times.

Here's the stock files I pulled from the custom ecm repository. Loaded the 4L60E one and loaded 4L80E as the compare file. Then did the segment swap, but it wouldn't save. Maybe the stock files are bad. Note that the title of the 4L60E file says 12212088 but it's actually a 12202088 OS.

I had trouble with the newest version until I took the emissions tutorial and registered the test. This was covered in the link below post #7

It won't save if the OS is different #'s like shown above.

I see what you are saying about the OS # being the same. I did not have trouble doing/saving the segment swap file.

Thank you for confirming. I'll look into the emissions tutorial and test.

It asks for a device code when attempting to take the training for Parameter access. I was just playing around with the latest version of the software to see if I could do a segment swap on it for viewing purposes without license. I was trying to help someone out. My MPVI 1 is on an old laptop that I use on older firmware on that I did my own segment swap on without issues. Then again, it's registered with license, etc. It's just interesting that HP tuners on their newer VCM suite doesn't let you do something simple like perform a segment swap on stock files just to view it without registering the software to a MPVI device.

I was able to view the file you sent on the new software. Thanks again!

Yep our Feral Federal Goverment got their hands in there and required them to "educate" us on disabling any emission devices that are installed from the factory. Like I said I had trouble with mine until I got the test done, my computer code registered. Follow the steps from the linked post from earlier. I had difficulty with all of it to so i made it as step by step as I was able to at the time. I did have to restart my computer for all the changes to take affect.
