99 Camaro 4l60e question please help
If you have to tear anything down, I would just do the original transmission. Maybe tear down the new one to get some decent hard parts if needed. Bottom line is: if you open the 4x4 unit to swap stuff your going to find damaged parts.
If you want to take the risk & work with blinders on, you can just change the output shaft & extension housing. Go after the parts from the 2wd drive, that way all you have to do is install the two items.
I just don't recommend a patch job. They always have to be done a second time. It's a lot of work to get the transmission out and back in...

For example, you would almost certainly need to replace the teflon rings on the input shaft. And if you have the input shaft out, you are only one snap ring away from replacing the likely worn 3/4 clutch. And so on and so on.
First choice would be a 2WD 4L60E/4L65E from years 2003 to 2008 as these have the hardened sun shell and a few other upgrades. (Maybe hardened sun shell came out in 2002).
Second/last choice would be a 2WD from years 2008 to 2002. Make sure the bell housing has a bolt hole in the 12 O-Clock position to indicate its a 300mm input shaft.
