Default 4L65e fluid capacity

I bought an LS3 with a 4L65e tranny from GM Connect and Cruise. Instead of getting the converter for this tranny I ordered the converter for a 4L70 tranny as it has a higher stall speed, the car only weighs 2700 lbs.
The documentation says to fill the tranny with 12 quarts, it took 14 quarts to get it to the full line on the stick. That level is roughly where the pan gasket is.
Just wondering if the 4L70 converter is what took the addition 2 quarts or was the GM docs wrong?

Yes, the converter took some of it. Did you pre-fill the converter before mounting it into the transmission case? I'm told there could be trouble on initial start up with the trans if the converter isn't primed with some Dexron ahead of time.

Yes, I put as much as I could into the converter, to the point where it was starting to run out when sliding it onto the input shaft.
After adding a total of 12 quarts and starting the engine to check the level I had to add 2 more to get the level up to the fill mark.

GM doesn't know the capacity of the cooler, lines or the size of the torque converter. 12 quarts is just a starting point not a set number.

It doesnt necessarily matter "how much" you put in it. What matters is what you put in it is showing full. When we we say "full" is just a little over the pan rail of the case.

And also note: Checking the fluid on a 4L60E is not simply a pull out of the dipstick, wipe, reinsert and then read it - there's a more involved procedure for best accuracy. It must be done hot but then wait for thirty minutes to let the vehicle cool down. Restart the motor and then sitting still, briefly row through each gear notch with the motor running and then return to park. Get out and with the motor running, check the trans fluid.

This procedure is in the owners manual but not many read it.

On a fresh trans, yes you will want to do this.

With a Connect & Cruise purchase there isn’t a manual. What I did was basically what you detailed. I didn’t do the 30 min cool down and restart.
I’ve now got close to 1400 miles on it. I’d return from a spirited 20-30 mile drive, pull into the garage, keep the engine running, pop the hood, pull the stick, wipe it off then reinsert it to check the level.

And what question did you want answered?
As far as my tranny goes, I lunched the 4L65e twice, the pump both times. I needed a tranny fast so I bought a beefed up one from GearStar. It came with a Yank converter. It’s been fine and I did do the tranny fluid level checking like B52 suggested.

There's several factors...

There's two different Pans, as in car and truck.
Convertor as mentioned
Lines and Cooler size

That and check it correctly. If done so, and it's full, wouldn't worry about the text book 12 quarts.

You're in the wrong thread about something. You and your 2 posts go troll somewhere else.

This forum is not Grammar and punctuation 101 nor a political forum, I am not a mode but IMO let us keep those things out of here, It is a Transmission Tech and help forum, I do think LS1TECH does have such a place in the list but have not looked, Just my opinion. But If I was an admin or moderator I would remove such post.
