The old 3/4 steels measure:
3 at .080
4 at .060
1 at .078

My top and bottom plates are 0.128 and 0.218

The 7 new frictions all read .065

I’ll figure out what I need and call WIT on Monday.

I’m assuming the last guy in this tranny used Alto parts for the 3/4 frictions as they and their steels are thin. The steels are toast.
I ordered parts from WIT today.
Got all the other new frictions in today, their steels were fine.
Thanks for your help guys.

Got it from a friend that knew even less about trannies than me. I’m fixing it for him with help from you guys and YouTube videos.
The deepest I’ve ever been into an auto was my old hotrod tranny pump.
He’s paying for parts, my labor is free as I’m a rookie and still learning. He knows this could be a crap shoot and is OK with it.

Yeah I hear ya. If thats the case, and the 3/4 clutch was smoked before you go back together with it you might want to find the cause of why the 3/4 clutch was smoked.

As far as I can tell there was way too much clearance between the 3/4 frictions and the snap ring.

Owner said it was low on tranny fluid. The piston seals look good and don’t leak.

I decided to order some Raybestos GPZ frictions for the 3/4, they should arrive in a few days.
I did get new steels from WITT today and have more on order locally just so I can have enough to set the clearance correct.
Question, does it matter if I use a few different types, regular steel and lindered steel, or should I keep them all the same?
Rant….
Did UPS jack up their rates or did WITT hose me? $25.43 to ship a 2.2 Lb box UPS ground from KY to NM, took 8 days.
I rebuild BMW cam advance/retard units. It generally doesn’t cost me more than $13-15 to ship a 6lb box to the east coast.

I do not generally mix steel types but have been forced to a few times over the years and saw no issues with it .(In other words they didn't come back with any issues) One did come back with a broken sprag unrelated and the friction set I had done that with looked good as new and it had been in service over a year.
UPS RATES ARE INSANE but WITS does seem to hit harder than what I would think was normal to be honest. I have been billed 20 dollars shipping for a complete input sprag assembly , But they do tend to put them in much larger than needed boxes most of the time.
One of the reasons if my local wits does not have something but it is in the system, I go to their AMAZON store and buy it there , Get free prime shipping and many times a lower price oddley, I complain but my sales person says they are not allowed to price match even themselves lol.

Frank, good info.
I looked at the WIT store on eBay and shipping was $5!
The GPZ frictions should be here tomorrow.
I put a straight edge on the 3/4 apply ring, it’s got a very slight bow to it so that’s on order too.

I’m using Raybestos GPZ frictions and 2 different size of steels for the 3/4 drum.
The springs barely come up to the bottom of the pressure plate.
I’ve got 0.075 clearance between the top of the pressure plate and the snap ring.
Do you think I should get longer springs?

That would probably be a good idea. @FranksCustomTrans likes to upgrade those springs on his builds.

I’ve been looking around to see where to get the longer springs, Sonnax only lists the standard length springs that I already bought.

He said he gets them from Harbor Freight, in a spring assortment pack. It's in his tips and tricks thread. It's good stuff, you should read through it.

Found them in another one of his posts…..

The springs commonly available actually HILLMAN 540006 Perfect snap in fit to replace stock springswith higher spring rate and a little taller and stiffer but stand heat really well. I have seen these where the EPC/PCS has failed and the 3-4 clutch cook. They will be black but springy as ever. I found them years back looking for an easy readily available replacement for the stock springs did some Test and been using them ever since.

Are you saying you are installing longer springs to make up the difference in your .075" clearance to get closer to .030 - .040"?

No, I was looking for springs that would stick up above the last steel to make contact with the pressure plate.
The springs I bought from Sonnax are the same length as the original springs.
I thought the spec was .060 - .085? Should it be less?

Harbor Freight doesn’t sell Hillman.
I went to the Hillman store, need to set up an account first and min order it $100, so that’s not going to happen.
Frank, where did you buy the 540006 springs from?

ACE HARDWARE SPRING SECTION . I imagine other hardware stores carry them also.
