Default 4L60/700R4 TCC Lockup in 3rd

I've heard many, while chassis dynoing their cars, will make a pull in 3rd with the converter locked. I understand the thinking. I also have the capability to do so.
My question, and it pertains to the holding capacity of the clutch itself, is aren't they putting themselves at risk of smoking the clutch?
I've an Edge converter with a single disc and my understanding is that it's really designed to maintain a cruise RPM in O.D. and not much more. Of course the triple disc has greater holding capacity but the racers I'm talking about don't have, for the most part, anything other than a single disc. Even if it is a "woven carbon fibre" by Edge, how's that going to hold up to WOT while on the rollers? FTR: In my case this is about 450-500 lb-ft TQ.
Edge suggested no.
Anyone here with relatable experience?

I do not advise locking the converter at WOT unless a triple disc , Yes high risk of smoking the lockup clutch .

That's what I figured.
Makes me wonder how they got away with it although I don't have all of the particulars.
Thanks as always Frank.

Oh people do it and many get away with it, But they is a risk that should always be considered and expensive risk as for instance shredding a lockup clutch is a complete tear down of the trans to clean out and or possible pump damage.

No thanks. If I never have to drop a transmission again, it'll be too soon.

I'm thinking WOT in 3rd with provide enough data from the dyno to be able to calculate converter slippage. Last time I went, there was no RPM trace on the graph! Seriously? So I had to scale it myself more or less based on the 5250 RPM crossover point, MPH and tire diameter but that in itself built inaccuracies into the results. Give me wheel speed and real time engine RPM and the math is simple.
But I'm set to give it another go and get some baseline data for the season ahead.
Thanks Frank. No lockup for me in 3rd!
