Default Torque Converter Bolt

hello back again I’m doing a rear main seal on a Tahoe and got stuck on the tc bolt I was able to remove 2 but the 3rd stripped. Trans is pretty much unbolted just connected by the torque converter.

had a welder come out and welded a key inside the bolt that was holding pretty good. Once I started putting pressure on the bolt the weld snapped.

i did a lot of searching and seen this was a common problem and many cut the head of the bolt off or use air hammer.

went and pick up air die grinder and burrs but I think I’ll have better luck with cutting wheel.

can someone point me to cutting wheel or something that will cut thru bolt

I believe there’s an Allen head in the center of the bolt? Is it stripped also? If so, at this point I’d weld a cheap socket to the bolt and then you can get an extension and ratchet on it.

Have you tried a good, fairly new pair of vice-grips? Or maybe a small pipe wrench, or 6 point socket? Che70velle has the best suggestion, but if you can't weld (like me), what I'm suggesting will save you money-IF it works. Good luck.....

Agreed with the above. Also you can try a turbo socket, I’ve had some luck in the past using em on stripped bolts like that.

I would rotate the flex plate down a bit and first try as said above a new vise grip with curved jaws to get the best bite. You may have to find a piece of square tubing that fits over the vise grip handle for more leverage.
To keep the flex plate from turning clamp another vise grip to the flex plate so it runs up against the block to prevent the engine from turning over.
And this is really bubba but take a 12? point socket that is smaller than typically is used to on the bolt head and just pound it on?

From Amazon
BHA Metal and Stainless Steel Cut Off Wheels for Die Grinders, 3” x 1/32” x 3/8”

You will also need an arbor
Cut-Off Wheel Mounting Mandrel Holder 3/8" & 1/4" Arbor Hole with 1/4" Shaft Stem for Die Grinder Accessories Drill Rotary Tool

I think I used a cutting torch the last time that happened to me.

I have some Blue Point extractor-sockets for stuff like this.
Think of a reverse EZ-Out. Just tap them on lightly, and the internal teeth/ flutes cut into the bolt head as you turn it backwards.

I think Harbor Freight is selling a knock-off version of it, if you don't want to deal with the Snap-On truck's ***-rape prices.

I would be REALLY careful ordering something from Amazon thats supposed to be safe turning 25,000 rpm. Safety glasses at minimum, and maybe a safety hood with a view window. Your eyes, so your choice. Better to order this stuff from Grainger or a trusted domestic industrial supply company....

Safety glasses and face shield are a minimum whenever using cutoff or grinding wheels no matter where you purchase them from. I have been using this brand for a few years, and they preform just as well as any brand that you will pay more for from your industrial supply stores.
