Default Converter question

I have an 01 z28 with 2.73 rearend gears. What i need is a converter with about a 3500 stall. What would you recomend ? Do i have to reprogram the pcm ? How would this effect my gas milage ? In all honesty i know nothing about converters.

TCI SF3500, Yank SS3600 (I think thats right), Vig3200

You don't have to reprogram your PCM, but it would help. Something that removes torque managment, lets you set shift points, firmness, etc.

I found in town mpg down maybe 1 or 2, just take it easy. Highway, saw no change because the converter stays lock, just like stock.

You'll need a cooler, a must have for sure. If you don't beat on the car hard it will hold up. What I mean is don't hot lap more than two passes, let the car cool down, etc.

With 2.73s you will feel looser than a 3.23 geared car. I had a Yank ST3500 w/ 3.23s and found it very drivable so I wouldn't think 2.73s would be that bad. Plus you get used to it quick (I did anyway).

Oh yeah, your car WILL run like a scalded dog afterwards, at any rpm range. No more dead spots, etc.

I read in a magazine with ls1 do's and dont's and it said not to remove the toqrue management, sure it gains you a tenth but it can mess up the tranny.

Absolutely true. It's there because GM knows the 4L60-E won't hold up to full-power shifts. The 2-3 upshift is the weakest due to sub-adequate 3-4 clutch pack. Too much power on the 1-2 can break the band or band pin.

Those are good choices shown. The Vig 2800 might be a better choice than a Vig 3200 if you are just starting out and have never driven a high stall converter before.

whats this i read about locked and unlocked converters?I see people with a signature saying locked xxx rwhp.

i am going with the tci 4400 with my 2.73 gears...there are a lot of guys with that big of a stall with 2.73's...pick the size stall you want, and go one step higher

Totally agree. Vig 2800 (or something similar) is a good TC if you're staying with the 2.73 gear ratio.
